Contest Entry #067 Selling souvenirs in Morant Bay
A vendor in the downtown area of Morant Bay in St. Thomas, Jamaica is working hard to eke out a living selling small items to visitors like me. Hers is one of about a dozen similar, one-room enterprises which caters to the occasional tourist, like me.
St. Thomas is a parish located in the southeast corner of Jamaica is not on the usual tourist route, so one wonders if she has a lot of customers.
Recently I spent a day in the market area there in the company of a young librarian who brought me to this place to buy a few souvenirs. This lady's merchandise, though crowded into a 10' by 10' area, was just what I was looking for.
Its colorful, attractive displays delighted me: tee shirts, towels, straw hats and purses. I particulary remember her sales method was helpful and accommodating. (I forgot to ask her about the need for the neck brace.)
I love meeting Jamaican locals one on one. They are so easy to get to know and will stop and chat for a few minutes with tourists like me.
