If you are like me, then you like coffee, but you are completely lost when it comes to the fancy terms. But, whether you are a casual drinker or a coffee connoisseur, you know how special Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee is.

The climate it is grown under and the rarity of the product itself, make it one of the most expensive coffees in the world. And to protect the brand, the Jamaica Coffee Industry Board has strict regulations that the coffee farmers must follow for it to be even called Blue Mountain coffee. I bet you thought it was all coffee grown in Jamaica that was allowed the title? You thought wrong.

Only coffee grown in the actual Blue Mountain range, (the parishes of Portland, St. Andrew, St. Thomas, and St. Mary) is allowed to use Blue Mountain Coffee in its name or packaging. Additionally, only coffee grown above 2,000 ft in the Blue Mountains can be called Blue Mountain Coffee.

Every barrel of coffee must be passed by the Jamaica Agricultural Commodities Regulatory Authority (JACRA) the regulatory body with which the JCIB has since merged.

How Do I Know Real Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee?

Every good product has a dupe, right? But no matter how good that dupe is, it is never quite the same as the real thing.

To know if your coffee is the real deal,  here are a few tell-tale signs:

  1. The package states what percentage of the coffee is actually from the Blue Mountains. Because JACRA has no regulatory stipulations on blends, the company may have as little as 5% Blue Mountain coffee but still add it to the bag.
  2. If the coffee is packaged as 100% Blue Mountain coffee just search for the official certification to be sure.

What is the difference between Jamaica Blue Mountain and Jamaica High Mountain Coffee?

Well, for the coffee to be branded Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee, like I said before there are some stipulations on where it’s grown and the altitude at which it’s grown. Jamaican High Mountain Coffee can be cultivated anywhere on the island and does not have any stipulations on the height or climate at which it is cultivated.

So now that you have all that information, what are the favourites here to buy?

1. Wallenford Estate

As one of the oldest coffee companies on the island, Wallenford Estates, plants, processes, roasts and sells coffee both in Jamaica and around the world. The company’s entire line is complete with roasted beans and ground products from both the 100% Jamaica Blue Mountain and Jamaica High Mountain. The latest introduction to the line is the new French Vanilla, Hazelnut, Irish Crème and Amaretto flavours available.

You can purchase the brand in supermarkets in Jamaica or online. If you happen to be in Jamaica, book a tour of the farm too!

2. JABLUM

Jablum has Classic, Gold, Premium Blend and Instant Coffee. Their Classic and Gold labels are both 100% Jamaica Blue Mountain and their Premium Blend while not 100% includes Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee.

3. Craighton Estate

The coffee farm located in Irish Town, St. Andrew not only distributes 100% Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee, but it also offers tours to all those who wish to learn more about the history of coffee production in Jamaica. At least 80% of Jamaica’s coffee is exported to Japan and so it comes as no surprise that this particular coffee estate is owned by the Japanese coffee company, Ueshima Coffee Company.

4. Café Blue

Yes, we do have Starbucks now, but before they came along, Jamaica’s favourite coffee spot was Café Blue. It still is a favourite for most Jamaicans. The company not only serves Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee at its cafes, but it also packages and sells its coffee under the Café Blue brand.

You can pick from their selection of 100% Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee or Premium Blends either whole beans or ground. If coffee pods are what you prefer, those can be purchased as well.

5. Strawberry Hill

Strawberry Hill is the luxurious retreat set deep in the hills of Irish Town, St. Andrew. Now, it is not only a popular escape from the bustling city below but it is also the owner of its very own Strawberry Hill Coffee.

And since it is already nestled in the Blue Mountain range, it is only fitting that it is 100% Blue Mountain Coffee. It isn’t only served and sold at the resort, many supermarkets also sell the brand and it can also be purchased online.

There are so many brands that have committed to giving an authentic Blue Mountain coffee experience through every cup of coffee. Try as many as you’d like until you find the perfect one for you.
