Are we allowed to bring in uncooked salmon.... vacuum-sealed and frozen....into Jamaica?
ANSWER: by Wellesley Gayle Hi Sharon!
Thanks for reaching out with such a great (and very practical) question, especially as more people are looking to bring in their own specialty foods these days.
Let’s talk a little about bringing uncooked, vacuum-sealed, frozen salmon into Jamaica.
The Short Answer is Yes: It can be allowed - but only with proper clearance. Here’s what you need to know:
- It’s All About the Permit`
To bring any meat or seafood (including fish like salmon) into Jamaica, even if it’s vacuum-sealed and frozen—you’re required to get an import permit from the Plant Quarantine and Produce Inspection Branch or the Veterinary Services Division, both under the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.
This applies whether you’re:
- Coming as a traveller with it in your luggage, or
- Shipping it by mail or courier.
- Here's What They Typically Require:
- A valid import permit issued before you travel
- The fish must be processed (e.g., filleted), vacuum sealed, and frozen
- Proper labeling, including country of origin and expiry date
- Possibly a health certificate from the country of origin, depending on volume
- At the Airport (Arrival in Jamaica)
If you're bringing it in your suitcase:
- Declare it on your customs form.
- Be ready to show the permit if customs or quarantine officials ask.
- Without a permit, it can be confiscated, even if it’s just for personal use.
So please, don’t assume because it’s “just salmon” it’ll be overlooked. They’re pretty strict when it comes to food imports here, especially animal-based products. So yes, even if it’s just a small amount for your own use, it’s best to play it safe.
If you want to bring some in, I’d suggest reaching out to the Veterinary Services Division in Jamaica beforehand.
They’re usually very helpful and can process permits fairly quickly if it’s just a small quantity for personal consumption.
So again, yes Sharon, you can bring in frozen vacuum-sealed salmon, but just be sure to get the permit first so you don’t run into any hiccups at the airport.
Regards,
WG
