Winter in Jamaica? I am not sure we would consider our "cold" season winter and we definitely don’t have a typical winter like you might experience in colder countries. We have rather short periods when you’ll feel a cool breeze and the temperatures drop, particularly in the mountains.

On the whole, as you know our climate is warm, but during the cooler months, which is normally December to March, it can feel a bit cooler, especially in the mornings and evenings. Our normal tropical heat gives way to milder temperatures as cooler winds, known as “northers" which we also call "Christmas Breeze, sweep in from the North American mainland. These winds bring a refreshing chill to the island, though it’s not freezing!

In terms of temperatures, the coastal areas of Jamaica generally stay warm, even during the cooler months. In Kingston, for example, daytime temperatures typically hover between the low 80s to high 80s Fahrenheit (around 27-31°C), and at night, it can dip to the low 70s Fahrenheit (around 22°C). Which isn't too bad, right? But, the further you go up into the mountains, the cooler it gets.

The Coolest Places in Jamaica

If you're looking to experience the "cold" in Jamaica, there are a few places where you’re more likely to get that refreshing coolness, especially during the winter months.

Blue Mountains

The Blue Mountains is where you'll find the real chill in Jamaica. The Blue Mountain Peak stands at 7,402 feet (2,256 meters) above sea level and is the highest point on our island. It's known for its coldest temperatures, sometimes dipping into single digits Celsius (around 40°F/4°C). It’s a popular hiking spot, and reaching the peak offers not only cooler temperatures but also breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes, including Kingston below. For a more accessible cool retreat, Holywell Park, located in the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park at about 900 meters (3,000 feet) above sea level, offers a misty, crisp atmosphere perfect for escaping the heat. It’s known for its lush greenery, pine-scented air, and a small waterfall, making it ideal for nature walks and hikes.

If you visit around Christmas, you can even experience the "Christmas Breeze" event. Just a short drive from Kingston, Irish Town in the Blue Mountain range is another cool spot, offering a peaceful escape with places like Café Blue, where you can sip on Blue Mountain coffee while enjoying the refreshing temperatures. This area is especially popular with locals and expats looking to cool off from the tropical heat of the city.

Mandeville and North Manchester

Mandeville, located in central Jamaica, sits on a plateau about 2,000 feet (600 meters) above sea level, and it’s known for its cool climate. On chilly mornings, you might even encounter fog and a refreshing chill that feels a lot like the “Christmas Breeze” we love. The temperature here is typically 5°C cooler than Kingston, and it's a favourite spot for Jamaicans looking to enjoy a break from the heat and for returning retirees. Some areas around Mandeville even experience occasional hail, which is a rare but fun sight to see on a tropical island!

When Does It Get Cold?

Jamaica’s coolest months are from December to March, which is also the peak tourist season. The “northers” bring cooler winds, making the days more comfortable and the evenings quite pleasant. The daytime temperatures usually range from the mid-70s to low 80s Fahrenheit (around 24-28°C), while at night, temperatures can dip into the low 70s (22-23°C). If you’re staying in the mountains or at higher elevations, you can expect temperatures to be even cooler.

What to Expect During the Cold Months

Although we don’t get snow or ice like in temperate climates, Jamaica’s cool season is still an enjoyable change from the heat. It’s perfect for outdoor activities like hiking, biking, and exploring cultural sites without the scorching sun. The mild temperatures make it an ideal time to explore places like the Blue Mountains, visit coffee plantations, or just relax at one of the island’s many scenic spots.

So, if you're visiting Jamaica during the cooler months, don’t forget to pack a light jacket or sweater, especially if you plan to explore the higher elevations. You’ll still enjoy plenty of sunshine, but it’s always nice to have a little extra warmth for those cooler evenings.

In short, while Jamaica is known for its tropical warmth, there are definitely spots where you can enjoy a little chill, especially if you head into the mountains or visit during the cooler months.
