First, I am certainly not a political expert and really do not keep up with local or international politics. However, as I was scrolling through social media, over and over I would see comments or posts saying that Jamaica should join BRICS. Thatโs when I started paying some attention to it and did some minor research to find out what BRICS is. Then surprise, surprise, we started getting questions about Jamaica joining BRICS as well, so I decided to do a deep dive and see what I could come up with.

BRICS is an acronym for Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. BRICS represents an assembly of five of the world's major emerging economies, a union forged to foster mutual cooperation, economic development, and political stability. Initially known as BRIC after its inception in 2006 (with the inclusion of South Africa in 2010, it became BRICS), this alliance was created with the understanding that the collective influence of these nations could reshape the global economic landscape.
BRICS emerged in response to the shifting global power dynamics. These nations recognized their potential to be key players in international affairs, advocating for a more equitable world order. By consolidating their economic prowess and political influence, BRICS aimed to challenge the existing hegemony and promote a multipolar world.
Since so many people are imploring Jamaica to join BRICS especially, after announcing that we will be parting ways with the British Monarch, there certainly must be some benefits to Jamaica joining BRICS right? Hereโs what I came up with:
1. Economic Advancement: Joining BRICS would open new avenues for Jamaica's economic growth. Access to the BRICS market would present opportunities for increased trade and investment, stimulating various sectors of the Jamaican economy. Additionally, the BRICS nations' New Development Bank could also be a possible source of funding for infrastructure and sustainable development initiatives in Jamaica.
2. Political Influence: BRICS operates on the principles of mutual respect and equality, giving Jamaica an equal voice in shaping global policies. This influence could aid Jamaica in addressing issues vital to its national interests on a global platform.
3. Technological Exchange: BRICS nations are at the forefront of technological innovation. Jamaica could benefit from their expertise, leading to advancements in education, healthcare, and infrastructure. For instance, China, one of the BRICS nations, has already made a name for itself as a big trade and investment partner in Jamaica, concentrating on infrastructure and tourism development.
4. Infrastructure Development: BRICS countries often collaborate on large-scale infrastructure projects. Jamaica, with its strategic location in the Caribbean, could become a hub for trade and transportation, transforming its infrastructure and bolstering its economy.
I doubt any political arrangement can be one-sided, so if Jamaica were to join, we would have to bring something to the table as well. We could offer:
1. Cultural Diversity: Jamaica boasts a rich cultural heritage, offering a unique perspective within the BRICS consortium. Cultural exchanges could foster understanding and appreciation among member nations, enhancing diplomatic ties.
2. Tourism Potential: Jamaica's tourism industry is renowned globally. Its hospitality and tourism management expertise could be valuable to BRICS nations aiming to boost their tourism sectors.
3. Blue Economy Initiatives: Jamaica's initiatives in the blue economy, such as sustainable fisheries and marine conservation, align with the global focus on environmental sustainability. BRICS countries could learn from Jamaica's innovative approaches.
4. Renewable Energy: Jamaica has been making strides in renewable energy, particularly in solar and wind power. Sharing these advancements could contribute to the BRICS' goal of sustainable development.
The truth is we donโt know. I think the idea really came about when the 10th BRICS Summit, which took place in Johannesburg, South Africa, from July 25 to 28, 2023, extended a special invitation to our Prime Minister Andrew Holness.
The historic invitation made Prime Minister Holness the first Head of Government from Jamaica and the Caribbean to ever attend the BRICS Summit.
The prospect of Jamaica joining BRICS opens a gateway to unparalleled opportunities. By aligning itself with these economic giants, Jamaica could amplify its global footprint, drive economic growth, and foster innovation.
As the world continues to evolve, strategic alliances like BRICS serve as pathways to a more interconnected and prosperous future, offering Jamaica a chance to be a driving force in the global arena.
