By Venesha Johnson | Associate Writer

Christmas in Jamaica is a time of warmth, celebration, and creativity, but growing up in rural Jamaica, our traditions looked a little different. Back then, most homes didn’t have a traditional Christmas tree, not even an artificial one. Instead, we’d string up pepper lights and decorate an outdoor tree that we called the Jamaican Christmas tree. It wasn’t a pine tree, but it was ours, and it brought just as much festive joy.

Today, Christmas trees have become a big part of the season. Did you know you can find real Christmas trees grown right here in Jamaica? Let’s dive into where to find both natural and artificial trees to make your Christmas extra special.

Real Christmas Trees

Jamaica Forestry Department

For a fresh, natural Christmas tree with that signature pine scent, the Forestry Department has you covered. As the government agency responsible for conserving Jamaica’s forests, they grow and sell Cupressus lusitanica trees during the holiday season.

  • Where They’re Grown: The trees are cultivated in the cool climates of Litchfield in Trelawny, and Clydesdale and Mount Airy in St. Andrew.
  • How It Works: Trees from Mount Airy and Clydesdale are cut based on orders and transported to the Head Office at 173 Constant Spring Road for pickup. At the Litchfield location, customers can visit, select their tree, and have it cut and delivered onsite.
  • Pricing: The trees are available at an affordable rate of $1,200 per foot.

Supporting the Forestry Department not only gives you a beautiful tree but also helps to promote sustainable forest management, as the agency’s mission focuses on maintaining and increasing environmental and economic benefits.

About the Forestry Department

Established under the Forest Act of 1996, the Forestry Department is Jamaica’s Executive Agency for managing and conserving forest resources, particularly on public lands. With around 40% of Jamaica forested, including 26% on Crown Lands, the agency plays a critical role in environmental protection and sustainable forestry practices.

The agency’s history dates back to 1937, and through the years, it has been part of various ministries, reflecting its importance in agriculture, environment, and urban renewal. Officially designated as an Executive Agency in 2010, the Forestry Department continues to adapt to meet Jamaica’s environmental needs while providing unique services like natural Christmas trees during the festive season.

Best Buds Jamaica

They range from 4 to 14 feet, catering to both first-time buyers and seasoned decorators. You can stay updated on their availability through their social media platforms, especially Instagram.

Artificial Christmas Trees

Artificial trees remain a popular choice for their convenience and reusability. Here are some top spots to find them:

1. PriceSmart Jamaica: Offers pre-lit options like the Member’s Selection 2.3m Christmas tree with LED lights (about 7.5 feet tall).
It also features Christmas tree sets for easy decorating.

2. Bashco: Known for variety, Bashco stocks trees in sizes such as 5, 6, and 7 feet. Their selection of decorations includes tinsel, lights, and ornaments.

3. Local Retail Stores and Supermarkets: Chains like MegaMart and Shoppers Fair often stock affordable artificial trees during the season.

Real vs. Artificial Christmas Trees: Pros and Cons

If you're torn between a real Christmas tree and an artificial one, here’s a quick rundown of the pros and cons to help you decide:

Real Christmas Trees

Pros:

  • Brings the natural, fresh scent of pine into your home.
  • Adds an authentic and rustic charm to your décor.
  • Environmentally friendly when sourced sustainably, like from Jamaica’s Forestry Department.

Cons:

  • Requires regular watering to maintain freshness.
  • May shed needles, creating extra cleanup.
  • Limited lifespan and disposal can be challenging.

Artificial Christmas Trees

Pros:

  • Long-lasting and reusable, making them cost-effective over time.
  • No maintenance, no watering or needle shedding.
  • Comes in various styles, sizes, and pre-lit options for convenience.

Cons:

  • Lacks the fresh scent and natural appeal of real trees.
  • Made from non-biodegradable materials, which may impact the environment.
  • Initial cost can be higher than a real tree.

So will you be grabbing a Christmas tree? Artificial or the real deal? Or maybe if you’re feeling nostalgic like me, you can still keep the tradition of decorating an outdoor tree alive, just like we did back in the day.
