While Wellesley couldn’t find much information on the health benefits of the fruit itself for the video, I was quite intrigued and decided to do a deep dive. I mean, a fruit that can get me drunk? I am all for it and had to find out more.

Now, Psydium, also known as Governor's Plum or Rolling Cherry, is a tropical fruit with roots in Africa, Madagascar, India, Sri Lanka, Indo-China, Indonesia, and China. It takes the form of a large shrub or a small tree, boasting deep red acid fruits resembling small plums, cherries or grapes.

The fruit itself is about an inch thick, initially scarlet, and turns purple when ripe. The pulp is highly meaty, offering a delicious combination of sweetness and acidity.

Is Psydium Fruit the same as Psydium Guajava?

Now I should point out that the name sounds pretty similar to the scientific name of another well-loved fruit. Very often when you search “psydium”, “psidium guajava” comes up in the results. Psidium Guajava, more commonly known as Guava, and Psydium (governor’s plum) are two different fruits.

This rather unassuming fruit packs a nutritional punch. With approximately 71 calories, it provides dietary fibre crucial for digestion and maintaining bowel regularity. Governor's Plum is a rich source of vitamins, especially vitamin C, offering a whopping 35% of the recommended daily intake per serving! It's even got antioxidants, potassium, calcium – the works!

They team up to boost your immunity, keep your heart in check, and even give your skin a healthy glow. And for those watching the scale, Psydium is a low-calorie, low-fat superhero that might just be your weight-loss sidekick.

Health Benefits

Let's explore the impressive health benefits and medicinal uses of Psydium:

  1. Boosts Immunity: Rich in vitamins A, C, and E, Psydium strengthens the immune system, guarding against infections.
  2. Improves Digestion: The high fibre content aids digestion, promoting regular bowel movements and preventing constipation.
  3. Weight Loss Aid: With low calorie and fat content, Psydium can contribute to weight loss.
  4. Anti-inflammatory Properties: Antioxidants in Psydium help reduce inflammation, potentially benefiting conditions like arthritis.
  5. Heart Health Support: Potassium in Psydium maintains healthy blood pressure, reducing the risk of heart disease.
  6. Skin Health Booster: Antioxidant properties combat free radicals, promoting healthy skin.
  7. Diabetes Management: A low glycemic index makes Psydium suitable for managing blood sugar levels.
  8. Rich Source of Antioxidants: Protects cells from damage caused by free radicals.
  9. Bone Strengthener: Calcium contributes to strong bones, reducing the risk of osteoporosis.
  10. Mental Well-being Enhancer: Some studies suggest mood-boosting effects due to Psydium's nutritional composition.

Along with all those amazing health benefits, Psydium has a rich history of traditional medicinal uses. From treating jaundice and enlarged spleen to addressing snakebites, arthritis, and respiratory issues, various parts of the plant have been employed in herbal therapies.

Is your arthritis acting up? The bark is your go-to remedy. And if you've got a cough or a bacterial throat infection, various parts of this plant are ready to lend a helping hand.

Everything has possible side effects and this fruit is no different. Allergic reactions? Possible, but rare. Digestive issues? Well, moderation is the key, my friend. And if you're on medication, best check with your doctor before diving into the Psydium feast.

Also, keep an eye on your blood sugar levels and be kind to your kidneys – too much of a good thing might not be so good after all.

How to Enjoy Psydium

  • Raw Fruit: Enjoy it in its purest form by biting into its juicy flesh after removing the pit. But be careful, eating too much can leave you feeling a bit drunk.
  • Smoothies: Blend ripe Psydium with your favourite fruits for a refreshing and nutritious smoothie.
  • Salads: Add sliced or diced Psydium to your salads for an extra burst of flavour.
  • Jams and Preserves: Make homemade jams or preserves for a delightful treat on toast or pastries.
  • Chutneys: Create savoury chutneys using cooked Psydium, perfect for pairing with grilled meats or sandwiches.

Psydium, with its unique flavour and a plethora of health benefits, deserves a spot in your culinary and wellness journey. Embrace this hidden jewel and explore the myriad ways it can elevate your health and taste buds. Remember, moderation is the key to unlocking the best Psydium experience.
