Not too long ago Wellesley paid Joseph a visit in the Blue Mountain and they had a wonderful conversation about all the amazing benefits of Cayenne Pepper. The Cayenne Peppers most popular in Jamaica tend to be a bit shorter than the more commercially advertised ones and actually go by the local nickname, “Bird Pepper”, simply because our birds have taken a liking to them.

Josephs suggests simply taking the small bird peppers as if they were capsules, or taking the cayenne pepper in a bit of warm water. There are also cayenne pepper capsules available, he makes and sells them as well from grounded cayenne pepper and a vegan gel for the capsules.

Some of the health benefits discussed included promoting blood circulation, for arthritis pain, migraine, cancer, cold and flu, high blood pressure, weight loss, and inflammation. Cayenne pepper is also used for its anti-bacterial properties, as a laxative, for wound healing and allergies.

1. Digestive Health

Cayenne pepper is known for its positive effects on the digestive system. It stimulates the production of saliva, which aids in digestion and increases the secretion of gastric juices in the stomach. This, in turn, enhances digestion and helps prevent issues like indigestion, gas, and bloating. Cayenne pepper is also believed to possess properties that can help relieve stomach ulcers by inhibiting the growth of bacteria like H. pylori.

2. Pain Relief

The active component in cayenne pepper, capsaicin, has been widely studied for its pain-relieving properties. When applied topically, capsaicin has been found to alleviate pain by depleting the substance P, a chemical responsible for transmitting pain signals. It is commonly used in over-the-counter creams and ointments for joint and muscle pain relief, such as arthritis and fibromyalgia. Additionally, consuming cayenne pepper may help reduce pain associated with headaches and migraines due to its ability to inhibit a neuropeptide called the substance P.

The compound capsaicin helps increase thermogenesis, the process by which the body generates heat and burns calories.
