Next thing you know you have had 1 too many rum punches (which for some is simply just 1) and you have lost control because you have underestimated the potency of the Jamaican rum. But you are on vacation, so it doesnโt matter.
Jamaican rum tends to be extremely strong, some being up to 80% alcohol and some of the strongest in the world.
They are not meant to be taken as shots (unless you are extremely brave) but are usually used in cocktails, mixed drinks, and cooking. But of all the rums made in Jamaica, which is the strongest?
To narrow it down we will have to look at which Jamaican rums are overproof. For clarification, overproof rum is the strongest and by definition has above 50% ABV (alcohol by volume).
This Jamaican rum is rated as the third strongest rum in the world. It is 160 proof with a content of 80% alcohol by volume. Jamaican tale states that the rum was given its name, John Crow Batty because for one to drink this rum they need to have the stomach of a John crow, a vulture that eats decayed flesh.
This rum is not for the weak, as just opening the cap will give you a strong enough whiff that can get the job done on its own, no need to take a sip. The john crow batty rum is often had with fruity drinks, grapefruit soda, or Boom (a popular energy drink on the island.
The combination of the two is called a special at local bars, and even though popular is not recommended because of its possible side effects).
Wray & Nephew, a sibling brand of Appleton Estate, was founded in 1825 by John Wray, a bar owner and businessman, and was later expanded by his entrepreneur nephew Charles Ward.
This overproof white rum is typically paired with either water or grapefruit soda and has a staggering 63% alcohol content. This rum incorporates Jamaican culture, several facets of society, as well as some aspects of ceremonial, daily life, and traditional medicine. Its colour is brilliant and clear, and it has a natural fruity aroma with hints of molasses.
It is a particular combination of many varieties of rum from the Wray and Nephew estate. It gives the drink a distinct personality and is a necessary component of a proper Jamaican rum punch.
Hampden Estate's rums have a particularly funky flavour because of its high quantities of esters, which are a chemical product of the fermentation process and are produced using wild fermentation, natural spring water, and pot stills.
The Hampden Estate Pure Single, an 84-proof rum with flavours of practically overripe tropical fruits, smoke, and spices, is the company's flagship product.
If you're feeling very daring, try the brand's Overproof variation, Rum Fire White, which has a 63% ABV with powerful tastes of cherry, oak, and spice.
A premium White Overproof Rum from Jamaica is called Rum-Bar Rum. This combination of three unaged rums was made according to tradition using our 100% copper Pot-Still, which gives us a high level of quality and flavour and gives rum drinkers throughout the world a better-tasting rum.
Traditional overproof pure pot still rum is presented at 63% ABV. Banana aromas predominate on the nose, with a lovely mix of other exotic fruit carrying over to the palate and complemented by that traditional green vegetal Jamaican funk.
This white rum has been triple distilled for purity and a unique, mellow flavour. You may taste notes of tropical fruit and sugar cane as you drink it.
On the palate, luscious tropical fruits and strong citrus flavours are present. excellent for mixed drinks and cocktails. Like the last two rums above it also has 63% ABV.
