Every now and then, even Kingstonians feel the need to escape the hustle and bustle of the city for the fresh air, calm and tranquillity of the countryside. This is not something that most are able to do on a daily basis, which is where this gem steps in to save the day. I’m talking about the Kingston Reggae Garden.

Kingston Reggae Garden is the perfect escape; a unique blend of natural beauty, vibrant culture, and relaxation. It’s just a short drive from Kingston and offers everything from delicious Jamaican cuisine to serene river access. Yes, a river! That is the most exciting part! The garden's numerous seating options, including armchairs, hammocks, and porch swings, provide the perfect setting for enjoying a laid-back afternoon. As co-owner Cindy Reliszko puts it, "We wanted to create a space where people can relax, enjoy reggae music, and experience the beauty of Jamaica."
It’s located about 20 minutes from Manor Park, so if you are travelling from that direction you will find the garden on the right side of the road, marked by a bright red gate and sign. Otherwise, you can make use of the trusty Google Maps to get you there.
Kingston Reggae Garden is one of the few bars that I know of with direct river access, and to me, this is the major selling point. It’s a picturesque setting, with Bamboo steps at the far end of the garden that leads down to a tranquil river, where you can wade or dip your feet in the cool, refreshing water.
There is no need to burden yourself with taking your own food and refreshments. The cosy bar serves ice-cold beers and soft drinks while the restaurant features a delectable selection of traditional Jamaican dishes like jerk chicken and pork, and red peas soup.
David Janssen, one of the owners, mentions, "We partner with local chefs like Sharda Bepat of House of Roti to bring authentic Jamaican flavours to our guests. It's all about celebrating the island's culinary traditions."
Once you visit you will probably be greeted by the friendly owners, Belgian expats David Janssen and Cindy Reliszko, whose passion for reggae music and Jamaican culture inspired them to create this idyllic retreat. Their warm hospitality ensures that every guest feels at home, whether they’re a first-time visitor or a returning friend.
Entertainment and Events
Kingston Reggae Garden offers more than just food and drink; it's a hub for entertainment and cultural events. Soothing reggae classics fill the air, creating a family-friendly atmosphere that invites relaxation and enjoyment. The garden hosts a variety of themed nights, including Games Night every Wednesday and Cocktail Fridays, where guests can enjoy expertly crafted cocktails by veteran mixologist Curtis Spence.
Every month, the garden transforms for "Chill Pon The Hill," a Sunday event that showcases its full potential as an event space. The expansive lawns and riverside area can accommodate multiple groups without feeling crowded, making it an ideal venue for everything from art exhibitions to corporate gatherings. Janssen's well-curated reggae playlist features legends like Beres Hammond, Black Uhuru, and Gregory Isaacs, providing a perfect soundtrack for the venue.
Kingston Reggae Garden is open from Tuesday to Sunday, with the bar operating from 3 p.m. until the last guests leave. The restaurant opens at noon on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. While there is currently no admission fee, you are encouraged to support the bar to help maintain the beautiful property. Also note that outside food and drinks are not allowed.
Kingston Reggae Garden is the ideal getaway for anyone looking for a tranquil break from the bustle of Kingston's Corporate Area. With its scenic surroundings, delectable cuisine, and friendly people, it's the perfect place for a midweek getaway or a weekend get-together with loved ones.
