Devon House I-Scream
Every trip to Jamaica should be completed with a taste of Devon House Ice Cream, especially if you are in Kingston and can head over to Devon House. You see Devon House isn't just about ice Cream, it’s a significant part of our history. It’s the estate of our first black millionaire, George Stiebel. There is much to explore on the grounds, with additional restaurants, a play area for kids and so much more. On any given day, you'll see couples on dates, most often with an ice cream in hand. This brings us right back to the star of the show, the Ice cream parlour.
With over 20 flavours. It is nearly impossible to leave Devon House without finding your new favourite flavour. And, they sure do keep things interesting with unique offerings like Crunchy Munchy, Grape Nut, Coffee (Jamaica’s very own Blue Mountain coffee) and Devon Stout (flavoured with a local island beer). What I love most, is how well-pronounced each flavour is. You never have to think too hard or wonder too long what flavour you are having. You will be able to tell right away. There is even a bun and cheese flavour, inspired by a popular Jamaican snack of the same name.
I can't get over just how thick and creamy their ice cream is! Despite the heat of Jamaica, you can savour your ice cream while soaking up the sun. It won't melt as quickly as others.
The ice cream’s reputation for excellence is so well-regarded that National Geographic named it the fourth best place in the world.
Responding to popular demand, Devon House I-Scream has recently become available in retail stores across the island. This expansion is part of a new distribution partnership with the Wisynco Group, allowing more people to enjoy these delightful flavours at home. Packaged in eco-friendly, biodegradable containers with safety seals, Devon House I-Scream is now available in pint and quart sizes to ensure the same indulgent experience as at the parlour.
Kremi
Kremi is another popular Jamaican ice cream brand. It was founded by Christopher Clarke, the Managing Director & CEO of Caribbean Cream Limited. Inspired by his mother, Carol Clarke-Webster, who worked long hours to perfect Devon House I-Scream, Christopher aimed to create an affordable, high-quality alternative for the public.
Since its inception in 2006, Kremi has become a market leader in bulk ice cream, known for its bold, tropical flavours such as rum and raisin, grape nut, orange pineapple, stout, and coffee rum cream. The brand’s commitment to high manufacturing standards ensures that every scoop meets international quality requirements.
Kremi’s appeal lies not only in its delicious flavours but also in its variety of sizes and modern packaging. Flavours like Cookies N’ Cream, Hot Fudge, and Cherry Chocolate Chip cater to a wide range of preferences, making it a popular choice for any occasion. The brand also offers ice cream cakes and individual 165g packages, available in cases of 12, with flavours including cookie and cream, vanilla, and grape nut.
In addition to its traditional ice cream offerings, Kremi has introduced a line of frosty treats, promising memorable moments with each bite. These flavorful frozen icicles come in fun varieties like kola champagne, grape, green apple, watermelon, and sour cherry, featuring the brand's cheerful mascot, Mee.
Crazy Jim
It took a bit of research to find out of Crazy Jim products were still on the market and apparently they are, which is music to my ears. As a child Crazy Jim was one of my favourite local ice cream brands. Over the years they have dwindled in popularity but I certainly hope to see them regain that popularity soon. Their Ice Cream sandwiches, usually available in vanilla and grapenut flavours are still some of the best on the market today!
Now while those are definitely the most popular brands here in Jamaica. As Jamaicans we have always been excited to explore outside of our culture, so, of course, there are international ice cream brands that we also enjoy, I am sure you know these two popular ones, Nestle and Häagen-Dazs.
While I love the variety that international ice cream brands bring, there is nothing as great as the ones made right here at home. The real question is, which is better, Devon House or Kremi? Give them a try and let us know what you think.
