Do you believe in ghosts or as we like to say here in Jamaica, duppy? Every country has their fair share of “duppy stories” and haunted houses and Jamaica most certainly is no different. There are also many stories about legends that risked their lives for love, but the majority of these places are not considered haunted.

With that being said if you are brave-hearted and looking for a thrill, here are 4 Jamaican haunted locations that will leave you shaking in your boots.

Rose Hall Great House

Of all the haunted places in Jamaica, this is the most popular and probably the scariest as well. It is something to behold during the day but at night it can be downright terrifying. One of the scariest things about this place that many take note of is the portrait in the entrance hallway of Annie Palmer and how the eyes seem to move and follow you wherever you stand in the hall.

The owner of Rose Hall, the now-deceased Annie Palmer, who was reputed to be Jamaica's very own wicked witch, is responsible for the renown of the property. Three spouses, a number of lovers, and slaves are thought to have been murdered by the plantation owner. As a matter of fact, it is a slave who was believed to be Annie's partner who murdered Annie herself.

If you visit Jamaica, you absolutely must take the Rose Hall Great House tour, which is a history retrospective full of enigmatic events. According to some eyewitness stories, you may even encounter the ghost of the white witch floating around the compound.

Flat Bridge

Ask any Jamaican where is the scariest place to drive and I am pretty sure their answer will be Flat Bridge. But it’s just a bridge, so what could be so terrifying about it? I must admit, without the horror stories, all the myths and tales surrounding Flat Bridge, it looks quite unassuming. However, Flat Bridge has experienced a lot of car accidents over the years—possibly even millennia.

There are also numerous ghost tales about slaves seeking retribution and making sacrifices to hasten their demise. And even if mermaids or “Riva Mumma” as we call them here in Jamaica, don't inhabit any other bodies of water on the island, the majority of people believe they do under the Flat Bridge.

Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle, which is situated in Pedro, St. Ann, was constructed by Lewis Hutchinson, the country's first acknowledged serial killer. He soon acquired the moniker "the mad doctor" due to his ability to dispatch a lone bystander with a single shot. Later, his slaves would drive his victim's corpse into a sinkhole on the property. He would entertain his victims in his castle before murdering them when his dementia was at its worst.

The precise amount of deaths committed by Hutchinson will never be known but it is believed that the spirits of his victims haunt the castle ruins even now.

Duppy Church

About a five-minute journey separates the abandoned St. George's Anglican Church, now known as Duppy Church, from the Mile Gully town centre. According to legend, it was abandoned because the 'duppies' caused chaos in the gathering. As there are no other structures close by, the church is situated in a remote region.

The windows are broken, and there are no entrances. Because of the graves and tombstones that encircle it, it is said to have an eerie and spooky appearance. People claim to have heard faint organ music playing outside the church, and there have been reports of taxi drivers picking up duppies in the area at night who are passing off as adolescent girls. Duppy Church is generally shunned by the locals.

There you have it, 4 for sure Jamaican haunted locations. If you dare, go ahead and make a visit. Want to know more about Jamaican duppies? Well, one of the most common is the Rolling Calf and you can read all about them right here

And when you are ready for a trip to any of these places, just let us know.
