The Paris Olympics 2024 has been quite a, for a lack of better words, humbling and eye-opening experience for Team Jamaica so far. We have not been dominating as much in the sprinting events as we usually do and despite some of our athletes running their personal bests in the heats, they seem to be falling short during the finals.

The great part of it all though, is that we are seeing our field athletes dominating and representing Jamaica tremendously well. Bringing much more support to those athletes that never got the recognition they deserved.

Let’s take a look at how our athletes performed on day 9.

1. The Events:

Women’s 4x400 Relay Heats

Team Jamaica blazed through heat 2 of the women’s 4x400m relay with a season's best of 3:24.92!

Women’s 100m Hurdles Semi-Finals

After three intense semi-final rounds, neither Danielle Williams with a time of 12.82s nor Janeek Brown with her time of 12.92s advanced to the women’s 100m hurdles final. However, with a blazing time of 12.44, Ackera Nugent secured her spot in the women’s 100m hurdles final!

Women’s 4x100 Relay Finals

Team Jamaica delivered a commendable performance, securing 5th place in the women’s 4x100m relay with a time of 42.29 seconds.

Men’s Tripple Jump Finals

After opting to skip his sixth jump, Jaydon Hibbert secured 4th place in the men’s triple jump final with a distance of 17.61 meters.

Men’s 400m Hurdles Final

In a devastating turn of events, Roshawn Clarke was unable to finish his 400m hurdles final after falling at the last hurdle.

2. Athlete Highlights:

Paraded in front of fans with the Eiffel Tower in the background, McDonald, Hammond Ross, and Spencer-Carter received their upgraded Olympic medals from the Sydney 2000, Beijing 2008, and London 2012 Games, respectively.

McDonald was awarded bronze in the women's 200m after Marion Jones admitted to doping. Hammond Ross received her bronze in the long jump after Russian Tatyana Lebedeva's 2008 results were disqualified. Spencer-Carter's bronze in the 400m hurdles was upgraded following the disqualification of Natalya Antyukh due to the Russian doping scandal.

3. Medal Count:

Gold: 1
Silver: 3
Bronze: 2

Heidian Robinson: “Great run by the ladies especially the 3rd leg .. 🇯🇲”

Orville Johnson: “This is what I fear... our athletes run season's bests in heats and semis then lose poorly in finals…”

Aldith Douglas: "Pick yourself up, brush yourself off and get ready for your next major event ... you represented brand JA with a lot of dignity abd courage and we are grateful 🙏🇯🇲❤️"

Muffet Harrison: "I was wondering what happen to him in the triple jump , see none of his jump throughout, you did exceptionally well , keep up the good works JH , be patience ."

Closing Note:

With only one day and 3 events left for Team Jamaica at the Paris 2024 Olympic games, it is fair to say that unlike previous years we will not be leaving with double-digit medals as we normally do. However all is not lost, despite not collecting as many medals as we hoped to, we are currently ranking at 3rd on the track and field charts.

Do you think by the end of the games we will be able to jump to 2nd place?
