The first day of the Paris Olympics on July 27, 2024, was pretty bland, with us only participating in 1 event, Judo, which despite our athlete, Ashley Mckenzie’s, best effort we got disqualified for. However our second day, August 2nd- a day after we celebrated emancipation day, was a jam-packed day and if I must say so, a successful one for team Jamaica.

Let’s jump right into the events of the day and what happened.
Men’s 100-meter Butterfly
We were all cheering for Josh Kirlew to make it to secure a semi-final spot in the 100m butterfly but unfortunately, he finished fifth in the first heat with a time of 54.66. The heat was won by Croatia’s Nikola Miljenic in 53.32s. This was Kirlew’s first time at the Olympic games.
Women’s High Jump
Our national record holder, Lamara Distin, was unable to move on to the semi-final of the women’s high jump. Below her season’s best of 2.00m, Distin was only able to clear the bar at 1.88m, despite her 3 attempts to clear the 1.95. Six women broke the 1.95m mark, including Nicola Olyslagers of Australia and Yaroslava Mahuchikh of Ukraine. The automatic qualifying mark of 1.97 meters for the final round was not met by any of the participants. This was also Distin’s first year at the Olympic games.
Women’s Triple Jump
Both Jamaica’s Ackelia Smith and Shanieka Ricketts are advancing to the women’s triple jump finals on August 3rd. Ackelia Smith with a distance of 14.09m and Shanieka Ricketts with a distance of 14.47m on her very first attempt!
Men’s Shot Put
Our very own Rajindra Campbell is off to the men’s Shot Put final after placing fifth in the qualifying round with a throw of 21.05m. He is the first Jamaican to qualify for the shotput final since Rio 2016.
Women’s Discus Throw
Team Jamaica’s Samantha Hall failed to advance in the women's discus throw, finishing in the last in the first-round group. Her best mark was 54.94m, way below her season's best of 62.12m. Only Valarie Allman and Jorinde Van Klinken achieved the automatic qualifying mark of 64.00m.
Women’s 800m Heats
In heat 6 Natoya Goule-Toppin qualified for the semi-finals with a time of 1:58:66, while in heat 4, Adelle Tracey finished eighth in 2:04.47 and missed out on automatic qualification. However, Tracey will have a second chance in the repechage round set for August 3rd.
Women’s 100m Heats
Our one and only “Mommy Rocket”, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, started her Paris campaign off on a positive note, finishing just 0.05 seconds behind the heats' overall pace-setter Marie-Josée Ta Lou-Smith with the second-fastest time in Round One at 10.92. This was the fastest heat of the day.
Tia Clayton, who finished second in her heat in 11.0 seconds, moves on to the women's 100-meter final in Paris. Audrey Leduc of Canada won her heat with a national record time of 10.95 seconds. Imani Lansiquot of Great Britain came in third in the 11.10s.
With a time of 11.19 seconds, Shashalee Forbes has advanced to the women's 100-meter semi-finals in Paris. Twanisha Terry of the USA won the heat.
400m Mixed Relay
To get into the Finals, our Mixed relay team set a new national record with a time of 3:11.06. The relay team consists of Stephanie Ann McPherson, Zandrion Barnes, Junelle Bromfield, and Reheem Hayles
Our golden girl, Shericka Jackson, did not participate in any of the 100m heats. She stated a few days earlier that due to injury she would not be participating in the 100m race. Instead, she will only be participating in the 200m. Shericka is the only woman other than the world-record holder, the late Florence Griffith Joyner, to finish in under 21.5 seconds in the 200m.
We were still in the qualifying stage, but come August 3rd, fingers crossed we should have some medals on the board.
Shanieka Ricketts qualified for the women’s triple jump finals with a distance of 14.47m on her very first attempt! That’s very impressive.
Here are some interesting moments caught by camera of our team on Day 2 of us participating at the Paris Olympics games.
Here is what social media had to say to our athletes on day 2.
Dayshawn586: “The semi finals are so unfair stacking the 4 fastest people in one semi final is crazy”
Dj_galaxy17: “@realshellyannfp tell ta Lou fi go easy it’s just the first heats”
Cedezcouture: “I love seeing athletes live out their dreams. Been watching her from champs days when she used to run for Manchester.👏”
S._.nique4: “The doll delivered exceptionally well! 🤸♀️🇯🇲 Sooo proud of youuu!🎉❤️❤️❤️”
Originalroyal1: “We note with interest how our Golden Girl Sherika was removed from the 100m race....God and Time”
Day two for Jamaica at the Paris Olympics 2024 was a lot. A few shortfalls but overall a great day, with an impressive performance from athletes.
There is so much more to come on day 3 for us, August 3. How many medals do you think we will be collecting?
