The Jamaica 4-H Clubs are taking significant steps to integrate technology into their agricultural initiatives, aiming to captivate and involve more young individuals in the sector.
“In fact, our career expos will place a strong emphasis on robotics and the technological side of agriculture,” stated Tedroy Gordon, 4-H Clubs Manager for St. Ann.
Gordon shared these insights with JIS News during the first-ever open day event hosted by the Runaway Bay Primary and Infant School 4-H Club on October 31. The St. Ann 4-H Clubs played a key role in organizing the event, which carried the theme: ‘Growing Tomorrow’s Leaders: Cultivating Skills, Harvesting Success.’
The event attracted students from various primary schools across the parish, providing them with exposure to different career paths in agriculture.
Highlighting the focus on technology, Gordon noted that young people are naturally drawn to innovative ideas. The 4-H Clubs aim to leverage this interest to direct them toward high-tech agricultural careers.
“A young man came to interview for the Rio Tinto Alcan Legacy Fund Scholarship, and his goal is to explore how technology can be integrated into agriculture,” Gordon said.
“The 4-H is exploring how to develop apps and other technological solutions that engage youth and draw them closer to agriculture. Young people are always on their phones, so we need to find creative ways to connect with them,” he added.
The St. Ann 4-H movement is committed to enhancing its outreach to young audiences, ensuring that technology becomes a bridge to a modern, thriving agricultural industry.
