While many reputable universities and colleges on the island, the University of the West Indies and University of Technology are the top two options for continuing education in Jamaica.
Of the two though, is one better than the other? Letโs compare.
UTech is based solely in Jamaica and is regarded as one of the best national universities in Jamaica while UWI has campuses in other Caribbean islands namely, Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados. There are also open campuses in these three countries as well as other Caribbean countries.
Both schools have their main campuses in Kingston with open campuses across the island. But UWI does not do all their programmes at every location in the region, this makes UWI more of a regional school than UTech.
The population of the students at UWI is much more diverse as students will come from other parts of the Caribbean to complete their studies.
UTech is often touted as the school to attend for a more hands-on experience, while UWI focuses mainly on their students, learning and understanding the theory but this is debatable.
I did not attend either of these universities myself, however, from the feedback I have received, UWI is the better school for Law, Medicine, Political and Social Work. In fact, students who attend UWI for law are not required to sit an entry exam into the Norman Manley Law School but students coming from other law programmes anywhere else in the world, including UTech, must sit the exam.
UTech is better for Dentistry, Technology, Engineering, Tourism and Architecture but both schools offer accredited degrees in each field.
The tuition prices vary per program, so there is no real way to check which institution is more expensive than the other. You could check the cost of the program you are interested in at both universities.
The University of the West Indies has now been ranked in the top 1.5% of tertiary institutions globally under the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking system. The regional institution has moved up an impressive 94 places from being in the top 3%.
The UWI has also maintained its position as the number one and is the only Caribbean-based tertiary institution to be included on THE's list. The 72-year-old university has added to its repertoire by ranking in the top one per cent of universities in Latin America.
Yes, UWI degrees are accepted in Canada.
The University of the West Indies is regarded as the top University in the region as it has been the only university in the Caribbean to be highlighted among the top tertiary institutions globally.
Yes, Utech degrees are recognised internationally.
UTech is ranked as one of the best Universities in the region.
Not every degree in Jamaica is valid in other parts of the world. UWI and UTech degrees however are valid in the United States.
For Caribbean students, CXC results are critical when trying to further their education or get a job within the region, for the most part. The basic entry requirements for both universities is 5 CXC passes graded I-III, in Mathematics, English and 3 other subjects specific to your programme of study.
I would say both universities have their strengths and pursuing a degree from either institution would be beneficial to your personal and professional development.
