But, what we have come to know, is that sand comes in a myriad of colours. And the pink sands of countries like The Bahamas are flooded each year. Is there pink sand in Jamaica? Let’s take a tour of Jamaica’s beaches to find out.
Pink sand is formed from the bright pink shells of the Foraminifera a microscopic coral insect found in some regions of the world. The vivid pink of the Foraminifera’s shells tints the otherwise white sand beach and varies from light to bright pink.
Jamaica doesn’t have any beaches of this variety but we do have many other places to enjoy the sun, sand and sea in Jamaica.
One of our many claims to popularity is the white sanded shores of the west and north coast. Locals and tourists alike traverse the northern thoroughfare, from Negril to Portland, with sure stops in Ocho Rios and Montego Bay, to experience the pure white sands of:
Though not as common as the powdery white and golden sanded beaches in Jamaica, parts of the north and south coasts both have black sand beaches. Treasure beach is well known for its deep rich sand and sometimes rough seas.
Some parts of Ocho Rios are known to have these sands as well. The phenomenon is linked back to volcanic activity in the formation of the island.
Again, Negril comes out on top with the clearest waters in Jamaica. But the turquoise shores of Montego Bay and St. Ann cannot be denied either.
Nice beaches can be found all across the island. It all depends on what your version of a “nice beach” is. For many, the northwest coast wins this category.
And they are absolutely stunning but these are not the only beaches in Jamaica that are worth attention. These are simply the more commercialised beaches.
Smaller areas, such as Bluefields and Belmont, Westmoreland, Hellshire, St. Catherine and the parishes St. Mary and Portland have natural, mostly undeveloped beaches that are more well-known by locals.
You won’t likely find beach chairs, umbrellas and restaurants lining the beaches in these areas but you will instead find a more comfortable and laid-back atmosphere.
Negril has larger beaches which means you’ll have more space to run around or to have adequate space between your group and other patrons who are enjoying the beach too. However, this does not take away from the beauty of the beaches in Montego Bay.
Both towns have generally calm waters and are great for snorkelling and other water sports.
I’m sorry, but your decision between Ocho Rios and Negril cannot be made by which has the better beaches. The difference between the two towns comes down to activities. Ocho Rios has way more activities both on and out of the water than Negril does.
If you want to relax on the expansive length of the beach with as little distraction as possible then, head to Negril. If you are in for an adventure, head to Ocho Rios instead.
This is a difficult question for any Jamaican and everyone who visits, what I can do instead is tell you our top picks. Maybe you can make your decision from there.
The colour of the sand does not affect your ability to swim and enjoy your vacation. Just pick your favourite water activity and head there for your beach adventures.

These companies in Montego Bay offer parasailing and other motorised sports.
Catamaran tours are perfect for most beaches in Jamaica, especially in Montego Bay, Negril and Ocho Rios. Companies like Island Routes offer many Catamaran Tours across the northwest coast.
Here are other Catamaran Tours in Montego Bay you can enjoy as well.
