What is Christmas like where you’re from? This might sound cliche, but in Jamaica, Christmas is the best time of the year. No, we may not have snow or see many people dressed in Santa outfits going around, but our Christmas is special just the same.

One of the key markings that the Christmas season is upon us, is what we like to call Christmas breeze. Yes, a few weeks leading up to Christmas, we get these random gusts of winds, a cool respite to our typically warmer days.

Not only do we have changes to our weather, but our people seem to change too! Everyone is much more pleasant, happy-go-lucky and friendly than any other time of the year.

As with most other places, there is also a slight rise in small crimes, like petty theft. So keep your valuables concealed when in crowded areas. There are many theories as to why this is so, but it is one aspect of our Christmas season that we would love to be rid of.

When it comes to Christmas decor in Jamaica, it comes down to where you are. For example, most business places will pull out all the stops, from mistletoes to bells and whistles. When it comes to our homes though, it can be a bit different.

In some communities, it is unlikely to find a single home with Christmas lights; in others, every inch of their home is decorated in blinding twinkling lights. Mandeville homes are known to have some of the most extravagantly decorated homes!

Here are 8 things that make our Christmas unique:

1. Warm Weather

Unlike those wintry Christmas scenes you see in movies, in Jamaica, we celebrate Christmas under the warm Caribbean sun. While some folks are bundled up in layers, we're rocking shorts and flip-flops. Our idea of a winter wonderland involves sandy beaches, not snow-covered landscapes.

2. Grand Market Extravaganza:

Now, if you have yet to experience a Jamaican Grand Market, you're missing out big time. Bustling streets filled with vendors selling everything. Toys, clothes, sorrel and everything in between are on sale. And, if you ever get exhausted, you can easily find a drink and delicious street food to revive yourself. It's like the ultimate Christmas shopping spree, and the lively atmosphere is contagious.

I think the biggest indication that it is Christmas though, is one we don’t talk about, and it happens for Gran’ Market. Our usually strict parents are extremely lenient, and the kids can join in the late-night festivities and maybe even pick out another toy or two right alongside everyone else until the early hours of the morning.

3. Reggae Christmas Jams:

Forget about the classic jingles – in Jamaica, our Christmas playlist is dominated by reggae and dancehall vibes. You'll catch yourself grooving to the beats of Bob Marley's "Santa Claus, Do You Ever Come to the Ghetto?" or the infectious energy of Shaggy's "Jamaican Drummer Boy." It's a musical experience like no other. You can check out some of our favourites on YouTube.

4. Delicious Jamaican Christmas Feast:

Christmas is synonymous with indulging in mouthwatering feasts, and we take it to a whole new level. And no, for Christmas, it's not a table filled with jerk dishes, instead you will find Christmas Ham, oxtail and curry goat. And let's not forget the sorrel and fruitcake – it's a feast fit for royalty.

5. Jonkunnu Parade Tradition:

Ever heard of Jonkunnu? It's a traditional Jamaican Christmas parade featuring colourful costumes, lively music, and energetic dances. The parade usually includes characters like the Cow Head, Pitchy Patchy, and the Belly Woman. It's a unique blend of African, European, and Caribbean influences, making it a one-of-a-kind celebration.

6. Community Spirit:

Christmas in Jamaica is not just about individual celebrations – it's a time when communities come together. Neighbours share food, laughter, and good times. It's a beautiful display of unity and the spirit of giving that makes the season even more special.

7. Sorrel and Rum Punch Delight:

Sorrel is the official drink of our Christmas season. Made from the sepals of the sorrel plant, it's a sweet and tangy beverage often spiked with a bit of rum. Trust me; it adds an extra kick to the festivities. Alongside the Sorrel is the all-time favourite, Rum Punch. It's a must-have at all holiday events.

8. Christmas Morning Church Service:

For many of us Jamaicans, attending a Christmas morning church service is a cherished tradition. The melodious sounds of gospel music, the festive decorations, and the sense of community make it a significant part of the Christmas experience.

In a nutshell, Christmas in Jamaica is a contagious mix of colours, flavours, and traditions that reflects our rich culture. It's a time of joy, togetherness, and lots of good vibes. So, if you ever get the chance to celebrate Christmas Jamaican style, don't miss out – it's a truly unique and unforgettable experience!
