QUESTION about: I would like to visit Jamaica next summer
I left Jamaica at 12 years old and I am now a 44 years old single parent of a 5 year old in England. I last visit Jamaica in 2006. Due to family breakdown I haven't a home to stay if I visit.
Money is tight and I am unable to do the good pay jobs because I have had depression since I was 14 years old. I dream to return home but I can't afford it. I would like to visit Jamaica next summer.
Any suggestion about accommodation in Old Harbour or near Old Harbour welcomed. Also advice needed on paying for medical cost. I feel the outdoor lifestyle would be better for my depression.
RESPONSE: by WellesleyHey Michelle,
I'm so glad you reached out to me. And oh, I appreciate your love for Jamaica! It's tough when you're far from home, but there are ways to make your dream of visiting for the summer a reality.
For accommodation in or near Old Harbour, you might want to explore options like Airbnb or vacation rentals. These can often be more affordable than traditional hotel and there are not much of the tradtional hotels on that side of the island either. Just be sure to read reviews and contact hosts to discuss your specific needs.
Regarding medical costs, you probably know that we do have public healthcare, but it is slow and resources there are limited. It's a good idea to look into travel insurance that covers medical expenses. This way, you'll have peace of mind in case you need any medical care during your visit.
I'm really happy to hear that you believe the outdoor lifestyle here could be beneficial for your depression, because its true. The lush vegetatation, sea breeze, warm climate etc, can indeed have a positive impact on mental well-being. Don't forget to take some time to reconnect with nature and soak up the sunshine while you're here.
Lastly, since you haven't been back since 2006, I'd suggest that you consider reaching out to any friends or trusted family members here in Jamaica. They could offer support, local advice, and maybe even a place to stay.
I hope these help Michelle. Feel free to ask if you have more questions, and I wish you all the best in making your dream a reality!
By the way Michell, here's one of my popular ebooks. It is called
Jamaica On A Budget. I think you'll find it extremely helpful.
