It is quite common now for tourists to opt for vacation villas or Airbnb's instead of a traditional resort getaway. And while most of these alternative accommodations offer supermarket services, sometimes they don’t or you would just love to grab a few things for yourself. The supermarket is a great place to acclimatise to your surroundings.

So, where are the best places to go grocery shopping in Jamaica to stock your villa with the important stuff, like Jamaican rum and Blue Mountain coffee, and a few other items as well like food and drinks? In Montego Bay, we have quite a few places that would be perfect.

Progressive Grocer’s and Shopper’s Fair Supermarkets

There are two Progressive Grocers located at opposite ends of the town and conveniently for you, you’ll have to drive past either of them to get to your villa or Airbnb. They do have a wide selection of grocery items that includes both Jamaican and international brands.

The supermarkets are fairly large with the Fairview location benign the larger of the two. The supermarket has a pretty impressive selection of fruits, vegetables, alcoholic drinks and snacks. You can get all the necessities in one spot. Usually, they have no issue with you honouring your purchases with US/Canadian/UK currencies, but you may not be too fond of the exchange rate.

The bakery has pastries, a coffee machine sandwiches in most cases, oftentimes you can purchase actual meals or rotisserie chicken as well.

You won’t have to worry too much about parking either as the parking lot is fairly big. If you need help bringing your groceries out, then an attendant is usually willing and ready to help.

Fairview and Whitter Village where the respective supermarkets are located are two of the larger shopping areas in Montego Bay and so this makes them both great options if you’ll need to visit other stores as well.

You can visit any of their 22 stores islandwide and expect the same products to be available for the most part. And even if you don’t see a Progressive Grocer’s or Shoppers Fair sign specifically, you can also look out for Loushusan, Brooklyn Supermarket, Sovereign Supermarket, D&Y Supermarket, John R. Wong Supermarket, J.R Bargain World Food Stores and Super Valu Supermarkets, they are all a part of the Progressive Grocers group.

HILO Food Stores

HiLo also has two locations in Montego Bay, however, the Fairview location would be the better option for you as it is most likely going to be the one on the way to your villa or other accommodation. Again with 13 locations, they can be found islandwide, often having more than one location in the cities and resort areas. HiLo stores also often have a Cambio and ATM inside or close by.

You can grab both Jamaican and international products from HiLo Food stores and they too have a wide assortment of drinks, fruits and vegetables.

HiLo also has a bakery but they are just expanding to include ready meals for purchase.

MegaMart

MegaMart has the least locations among the 3 supermarkets with only 4 locations islandwide. But I am not even sure we can call Megamart a supermarket because they do way more than groceries.

I am not sure where you plan to vacation but, you’ll only be able to shop at a MegaMart if you are staying in Kingston, Mandeville or Montego Bay.

In addition to the wide variety of groceries both in kind and brand, they also sell non-grocery items such as tables, pots and pans, appliances, TVs, igloos, you name it. If you feel as though you’ll need way more supplies than just groceries on your trip then I would suggest going to MegaMart if it is possible. The Megamart bakery and deli also provide alot more of each item than the other two stores would.

Each location has a pharmacy that operates within the same time frame as the store in most cases, so if there is a need for medication you can stop there. Some even have small phone stores attached, if you will need a Jamaican sim card or a phone to use while on vacation you can do that right there as well.

An ATM is usually on the building or directly inside the store.

My main suggestion when shopping in Jamaica is to stick with local brands or in the case of fruits and vegetables, stick to local produce. The costs will be significantly less which will be helpful if you are on a budget.

Remember, cheaper doesn’t always mean lower quality. It is never a bad idea to save where you can. Besides, that leaves you with enough to spend on delicious meals and exciting excursions while on vacation.

It is great to have you here, I hope you enjoy your stay in Jamaica.
