Being a Jamaican and living overseas, you often miss the taste of home as some stuff you are familiar with is less readily available than it is back home.
One snack we simply must have no matter where we are in the world is the flaky delights of Jamaican Patties.
Although the company was officially started by Lowell Hawthorne in 1949, he was in the bakery business long before this. In fact, he was born into it.
Before there was Golden Krust, there was the Hawthorne and Son’s Bakery in St. Mary, Jamaica. The bakery was run by Mavis & Ephraim Hawthorne, for 50 years with the help of their 11 children of which Lowell is one.
So, when the siblings moved to America, it would have been a missed opportunity not to use the skills they have honed over the years to fill a gap that Jamaican migrants have had for so long. So in 1949, with the help of their spouses, the first Golden Krust location was opened in New York on 1381 E. Gunhill Road.
On the back of the success, the first location had, a bigger manufacturing plant was needed to meet the demand for the Gold Krust patties. So in 1999, the manufacturing plant was moved to the South Bronx from 172nd Street to Claremont Parkway on Park Avenue.
The next step was to begin franchising the Golden Krust Brand that way the delicious patties could reach more people as by then not only Jamaicans were purchasing the patties. Mr Earl Chin from Brooklyn, New York was the first franchisee.
By 2005, the Golden Krust celebrated the opening of its 100th store, which was fitting as the company also celebrated 10 years.
Ever innovative, Golden Krust launched their microwavable patties so you could get your patties whenever you wish. Needless to say, they were a hit as well.
People have begun to be a little more conscious of their health and diet. Companies have had to find ways to make their products healthier. Sighting this, Golden Krust introduced their vegetable and spinach patties under their Better for you offering.
Outside of the retail stores, Golden Krust products can also be purchased at:
Something as good as patties needs a day to be celebrated. As such, the last Saturday in August was chosen as National Patty Day. While it is majorly celebrated in the United States, Jamaicans also highlight it on social media.
Food trucks are big in the United States, and the Golden Krust Truck was launched. The Golden Truck was brought to company events to give out free samples to its patrons.
In 2018, Golden Krust opened its first locations outside of the United States in nearby Canada. The two locations were opened in North York and Brampton, Ontario, Canada.
The siblings launched a foundation in honour of their parents Mavis & Ephraim Hawthorne. The Golden Krust foundation provides aid to scholars in America and Jamaica.
Recipients of the Mavis and Ephraim Hawthorne Golden Krust Foundation.
So far 350 scholarships have been issued by the foundation to individuals currently pursuing tertiary education. The foundation also partners with the Golden Krust company to provide interested persons with summer internships and employment opportunities.
Lowell F. Hawthorne, founder of Golden Krust Caribbean Restaurant was born in Jamaica before he moved to the United States where they thought of recreating the family business in their new home country.
His achievements won him many awards and accolades including the Order of Distinction in Jamaica - Commander Rank, for his service to Commerce and Community Development. He has also been conferred with an honourary degree by Medgar Evers College and was named Jamaica Observer Business Leader of the year in 2011.
The University of the West Indies granted Lowell Hawthorne an honourary degree a year later. He was also featured on an episode of Undercover Boss.
Another outstanding achievement for Hawthorne was his autobiography “The Baker’s Son”, which chronicled his life and outlined the story of his family’s journey from Jamaica to the US. It gives insight into the family business and transforms it from a small bakery in Jamaica to the powerhouse that it is today.
Proceeds from the book are given to the Mavis and Ephraim Hawthorne foundation to further the vision of Lowell Hawthorne of furthering education in Jamaica and the US. Mr Hawthorne passed away in 2017.
The next time you are in the US and would love a delicious reminder of Jamaica, Golden Krust is a definite go-to.
