Atlanta, Georgia. Gem Myers of the world renowned reggae band "Fab Five" will headline Jamaica Day - Family Fun Day on Saturday, August 4th from 11:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Salem Park in Lithonia, Georgia.
Myers will lead the entertainment as families and friends of Jamaica celebrate Jamaica's 50th Anniversary of Independence with a day of music, live performances, games, arts and crafts and food as part of the year-long celebration of Jamaica's Golden Jubilee.
DeKalb County District 3 Commissioner, Larry Johnson is supporting the event and encourages all his constituents to come out and enjoy the food, music and culture of Jamaica.
"We are thrilled that an artist of Ms. Myers caliber will lead the entertainment at this very special event," said Vin Martin, Jamaican Honorary Consul to Atlanta. "We always have a great Family Fun Day to celebrate our independence and this year, with Gem leading the performances it is going to be the best yet!" Martin enthused.
The veteran songstress, best known for the reggae classic single "One Man Woman" and her "Love Lines" album, says she is looking forward to partying with Jamaicans in Atlanta for the big Fami l y Fun Day.
"This is the kind of activity that we encourage in the district and throughout DeKalb County," Commissioner Johnson said. "Good clean fun for the whole family, and we get to interact with people from another culture in a friendly, relaxed environment which everyone can enjoy," Johnson said.
Games, arts and crafts, food, music and a range of live performances including Monty Montgomery and Ras Davinci to name a few.
"This is the kind of activity that is just perfect for whole families," said Heather Potter, Chair of the Jamaica 50th Atlanta Planning Committee. "There will be something here for everyone - domino games, competitions like donut eating, old-fashioned lime and spoon races, tug o f war, musical chairs, board games, jumpy house, .. the works! This will be Jamaica at play on display for everyone to enjoy," Potter said.
There will be several raffles and gift bags for the kids with "back to school" items. Salem Park is located at 5280 Salem Road, Lithonia, Georgia.
The independence celebrations will continue on Sunday August 5th with an ecumenical service of thanksgiving to be held at St. Timothy United Methodist Church, Stone Mountain, GA at 5:00 p.m. Jamaica's Minister of Education, the Honorable Rev. Ronald G. Thwaites will be the featured speaker.
