1. How to Get to Ocho Rios

First off how do you get there? Wherever you are travelling from, getting here by plane will be your obvious go-to. You will more than likely land at either of our two major airports. Montego Bay's Sangster International Airport (MBJ) is the closest major airport, about 1.5 hours away by car and Norman Manley International Airport (KIN) in Kingston is about 2 hours away. You can take private shuttles, or taxis, or rent a car from either airport, which should be relatively easy to arrange as most resorts offer airport transfers.

2. Where to Stay in Ocho Rios

This is going to be the key to your vacation, so you have to choose carefully. Your chosen accommodation can make or break your entire vacation. Here are some great options.

  •    Sandals Ochi – Perfect for couples with private beach access.
  •    Moon Palace Jamaica – Family-friendly, with amazing dining and pools.
  •    Couples Tower Isle – A romantic adults-only resort with a private island.

Jamaican cuisine is rich and flavorful, and you’ll have no shortage of great places to eat in Ocho Rios.

Great Restaurants in Ocho Rios

5. Practical Tips for Your Visit

  1.  Currency: Our local currency is the Jamaican Dollar (JMD), but US Dollars are widely accepted.
  2.  Tipping: It’s common to tip 10-15% in restaurants, and a small tip for tour guides or hotel staff is appreciated.
  3.  Language: English is the official language, but you’ll also hear Patois, a local dialect.
  4.  Safety: Ocho Rios is generally safe for tourists. However, be cautious in crowded areas, especially at night, and avoid displaying valuables.
  5.  Local Transportation: Taxis are the easiest way to get around. Look for red plate taxis, which are licensed and safe for tourists. Route taxis (shared taxis) are cheaper but may require some navigation.

6. Souvenirs Ideas to Bring Home

  • Blue Mountain Coffee: One of the best coffees in the world.
  • Jamaican Rum: Appleton and Wray & Nephew are popular brands.
  • Spices: Pick up pimento (allspice) and jerk seasoning.
  • Local Art & Crafts: Handcarved wooden items, paintings, and jewellery.
  • T-shirts and Reggae Memorabilia: Bob Marley-themed souvenirs are a favourite.

Ocho Rios is a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure, offering something for every type of traveller. From climbing waterfalls to relaxing on beautiful beaches, indulging in authentic Jamaican food, and learning about the island’s vibrant culture, this town truly has it all.
