Jamaica doesn’t have many competition shows, after all, we are a pretty small island. However, the few we do have are quite entertaining. Jamaica is a treasure trove of musical talent and most just need the right platform to be “discovered”. Among the many platforms that have contributed to the rise of Jamaican music is the iconic television show, Digicel Rising Stars. This talent competition has served as a launchpad for aspiring artists, propelling them into the limelight and leaving an indelible mark on the nation's music industry.

Digicel Rising Stars first graced Jamaican television screens in 2004, created by the telecommunications giant Digicel. The show aimed to provide undiscovered musical talents across the island with a platform to showcase their skills, develop their artistry, and compete for the ultimate title of Rising Star. With the reach of Digicel's extensive network, the show quickly gained immense popularity and became a staple in the Jamaican entertainment landscape.
The competition follows a classic talent show format. Aspiring singers audition in front of a panel of seasoned judges, each an expert in the music industry. Contestants are evaluated based on their vocal abilities, stage presence, and overall performance. Those who pass the audition phase are selected to progress through the various rounds of the competition.
The journey of the contestants is not just about singing; it also includes mentorship and grooming by experienced musicians, artists, and vocal coaches. Throughout the competition, contestants are challenged to showcase their versatility by taking on various genres and song styles, ensuring they have the skills needed to succeed in the competitive music industry.
The judges are just as important to the show as the competitors, their witty humour, banter and sometimes harsh commentary, help to make the show what it is today.
The greatest way to describe Anthony Miller, dubbed "Killer Miller," is that he is brutally honest. Audience members of Digicel Rising Stars either like him for his uncensored thoughts or despise him for scaring the competitors. The remarks made by Anthony Miller are both snarky and humorous, and few viewers disagree with the judge. As the producer and founder of Entertainment Report, Jamaica's top entertainment television program, he has seen the careers of many Jamaican stars and therefore knows which of the competitors have the best shot of having a career in entertainment beyond the show. However, the range of Anthony's media production expertise goes far beyond the realm of entertainment. He is regarded as one of Jamaica's best news producers and reporters by his peers.
On Digicel Rising Stars, Conroy Wilson, the Executive & Creative Director of Ashe Performing Arts Company, has secured a permanent spot on the panel of judges. Wilson, who is referred to by DRS viewers as the "blunt" judge, won over the show's audience with his tell-it-like-it-is demeanour and earned him a permanent judging position. As an executive member of the Ashe Company, he is no stranger to critiquing and offering advice to those looking to make a career in entertainment.
Singer, songwriter and actress, Alaine is the softer and more compassionate of the three judges. Though she offers honest critique and constructive feedback just like her counterparts, she offers it in a beautifully packaged box which makes her a fan favourite.
Rising Stars has seen a few hosts over the years including the likes of host extraordinaire Denise Hunt and radio personality Lady Renee. But since 2012, the competition has been hosted by Dr Terri-Karelle Reid. Like many other Jamaicans, I was first introduced to her through Rising Stars, since then she has gone on to host many local and international events and be a motivational speaker and TEDx speaker. But, as soon as Rising Stars season comes around she is back on the streets of Jamaica with the team searching for the next big star.
Recording artist, producer and media all-rounder Sanjay has been the host of the Chill Spot on Digicel Rising Stars for a number of years. The chill spot is just as the name suggests. Contestants often go to the before or after their performance to have a more lighthearted conversation about their weekly journey in the competition. They often learn what the country is thinking about their performances in real-time as well since social media is a part of the Chill Spot.
Digicel Rising Stars has played a pivotal role in shaping the Jamaican music scene. The show has been a breeding ground for emerging artists, providing them with a stepping stone to achieve greater success. Many winners and finalists have gone on to become household names, earning widespread recognition and respect within Jamaica and beyond.
Over the years, Digicel Rising Stars has discovered and nurtured several exceptional talents. Some of the show's most notable success stories include:
Digicel Rising Stars remains an influential force in Jamaica's music industry, identifying and nurturing raw talent that continues to shape the nation's musical identity. As the show continues to provide a platform for aspiring singers and songwriters, it cements its legacy as an essential institution in the growth and promotion of Jamaican music.
As viewers tune in each season, they not only witness incredible performances but also witness the dreams of talented individuals coming to life. The impact of Digicel Rising Stars Jamaica goes far beyond the stage; it is a celebration of Jamaica's rich musical heritage and a testament to the potential of its musical stars to shine brightly on the global stage.
