Lawrence Caribbean is said to be the definition of a hidden gem. It’s tucked away on West Boulevard, an unassuming white concrete block building that might be easy to miss, but it’s definitely worth seeking out. Gavin Lawrence, the man behind the counter, has been cooking up delicious Caribbean dishes for over 40 years. He has his roots in Jamaica and culinary experience from Queens, bringing a wealth of flavor and authenticity to his menu.
If you're new to Caribbean food, start with the shrimp. For just $10, you'll be served over a dozen plump shrimp in a rich yellow sauce, accompanied by rice and peas, stewed cabbage, green beans, and sweet fried plantains. It’s a hearty meal that’s sure to satisfy.
Looking for more variety? Lawrence Caribbean offers a range of dishes categorized by spice level: mild stews, moderately spicy curries, and fiery jerk options. The curry goat roti is a must-try, featuring tender goat meat in a flavorful sauce, wrapped in roti, a flatbread that adds the perfect touch.
