Portmore has grown a lot over the years when it comes to the available attractions. Here are some of the places you must see when you visit.
Hellshire Beach
Hellshire Beach is as much a part of Portmore as sand is to the shore. It is undoubtedly the crown jewel of Portmore! Hellshire Beach is renowned for its vibrant atmosphere and delectable seafood. Here’s what you can expect:
- Savour Local Cuisine: You can indulge in fresh seafood from renowned spots like Prendy’s and Aunt May’s. Try their famous escovitch fish paired with festival (you can make your own using this recipe, or enjoy traditional jerk chicken or pork.
- Relax and Sunbathe: With its soft sands and tranquil ambience, Hellshire Beach is perfect for sunbathing. Rent some beach chairs and umbrellas for a comfortable day under the warm Jamaican sun.
- Swimming and Snorkeling: Dive into the clear, shallow waters ideal for swimming and snorkelling. While not a prime snorkelling spot, it offers glimpses of marine life and stunning underwater views.
- Live Music and Events: Embrace the rhythmic vibes of reggae music with live performances that frequently grace the beach, especially on weekends. Don’t miss local events and beach parties that enhance the lively atmosphere.
- Shopping: Ofcourse you will need a souvenir to commemorate your visit. You will find local vendors offering handmade jewellery, T-shirts, crafts, and much more.
Fort Clarence Beach Park
Adjacent to Hellshire Beach lies Fort Clarence Beach Park. It’s not as popular as Hellshire but I wouldn’t consider it a lesser choice.
- Create Your Own Fun: Like most other beach parks, there is so much you can do here with a little creativity. Enjoy swimming, beach football, and volleyball amidst scenic surroundings. The beach park is also perfect for special events like weddings and family gatherings.
- Facilities and Dining: You will benefit from amenities including restaurants, bars, picnic areas, and free WiFi. Nearby dining options like Exquisite Restaurant & Lounge offer additional culinary delights.
Other Things To Do In Portmore
But that’s not all. Beyond its beaches, Portmore offers urban attractions catering to varied interests.
- Buzzers Gaming Arcade: The top indoor gaming arcade in Portmore offers entertainment for both children and adults. You can unwind with console games or challenge your friends to a game of basketball hoops. Try your luck at the claw machine, hop on a game motorbike and race to victory, or immerse yourself in the excitement of laser tag. In this game, each player wears an infrared-sensitive vest, and the objective is to score the most points by tagging opponents.
- Sunshine Palace Cinema: Escape to the movies at Portmore’s own Sunshine Palace Cinema. Featuring cutting-edge technology and a variety of films, it’s a local favourite for entertainment.
- Roller Skating and Go-Karting: Embrace active fun at Destiny Rink and Portmore Skating Place for roller skating enthusiasts.
- VRX Virtual Reality and eSports Center: Virtual reality has taken over the world, and honestly, it’s pretty cool! It lets you step into a whole new world, completely different from reality. With VR now a big part of gaming, you can do things like ride a roller coaster without ever leaving the ground, just head to the VRX Virtual Reality and eSports Center at the Sovereign Center in Portmore. And that’s just the start! There are so many ways to experience VR, and it keeps getting better.
- Two Sisters Cave: Two Sisters Cave, located in the Hellshire Hills of St. Catherine, is a fascinating piece of Jamaica’s history. Each cave features a large sinkhole filled with fresh water, which may have once been a vital water source for the Tainos. This limestone cavern is part of an extensive network of caves and tunnels stretching for miles.
One of its most intriguing features is an ancient petroglyph, a carving of a face estimated to be around 700 years old. Since the Tainos often created effigies of themselves and their gods as a form of reverence, and there’s no evidence that they lived in the caves, historians believe Two Sisters Cave was primarily used for ceremonial purposes. It’s a must-visit for anyone interested in Jamaica’s rich indigenous history!
