Contest Entry #056- Alligator Head, Portland Jamaica
This photo is looking out from the Alligator Head property in Portland Jamaica.
Across the bay you would find San San Beach and around the corner is Pelew Island and the deep deep Blue Lagoon.
Although the Alligator Head and this dock are private property, the owners are very active in keeping the surrounding coastline healthy.
They have set up a foundation and work with many local people/organizations on various reef health initiatives.
This involves coral replanting and a coral nursery, protecting endangered species (sea turtles), invasive species removals (lionfish), fishermen education on the complications from overfishing as well as educating farmers on the dangers of their pesticide/herbicide runoff which can end up in the sea, killing the corals and
other sea life.
I have had the pleasure of working with this foundation as well as visiting the beautiful alligator head property.
It is called alligator head because from further down, if you look at the property, the rocks going into the sea look like an alligator and alligator head.
