The ministry includes the following agencies:

  • Jamaica Cultural Development Commission- The Jamaica Festival Office was the initial name of the JCDC, which was founded in 1963.

  • Women's Centre of Jamaica Foundation- Due to the high rate of teenage pregnancies in the nation, the Women's Center Program for Adolescent Mothers was started in 1978. The Women's Centre of Jamaica Foundation (WCJF) was the name given to the Program when it was granted foundation status in 1991.

  • Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission- On November 17, 2003, the Jamaican government ratified the World Anti-Doping Programme and the World Anti-Doping Code. The committee's main duties were to create a framework for anti-doping policy in sports and to see that the Anti-Doping in Sport Act was completed.

  • Sports Development Foundation- The Sports Development Foundation, which started operating in 1995, was created as an autonomous organization to use sports to aid in the development of our country.

  • The Institute of Jamaica- Since its founding in 1879, it has been able to change the environment of the country through the initiatives and programs it runs. Their primary duties include founding and running museums and galleries, gathering and sharing data on the effects of the African presence in Jamaica, and nurturing young people's creative potential through the visual and performing arts.

  • Jamaica National Heritage Trust- The development, promotion, and protection of Jamaica's material cultural heritage fall under the purview of the Jamaica National Heritage Trust. The group keeps up Jamaica's list of National Heritage Sites. The Jamaica National Heritage Trust Act of 1985 established it.

  • National Library of Jamaica- The Institute of Jamaica Act of 1978 allowed for the establishment of the National Library of Jamaica in 1979. When the Institute of Jamaica was founded in 1879 to promote literature, science, and the arts, it started operating.

Who is the current Jamaica sports minister?

The Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment, and Sport is the Honorable Olivia "Babsy" Grange, CD, MP. Since 1997, she has served as a representative for St. Catherine Central. In 2007, she was appointed minister of information, youth, sports, and culture. She also oversaw special projects, entertainment, community development, and women's and gender issues.

She also held the positions of Government Senator and Parliamentary Secretary for Information and Culture from 1983 to 1985, as well as Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister from 1985 to 1989. For her contributions to the Jamaican music industry, cultural advancement, and public service, Ms Grange received the Order of Distinction in 2015 with the rank of Commander (CD).

She had the honour of being named the first Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Champion for Culture in June 2009. As such, she was charged with advocating for, among other things, the capacity building of cultural industries, cultural institutions, and individual artists.

In her lengthy career as a cultural activist, Minister Grange developed and managed talent at the local level. She is a director, event organiser, and fervent advocate for Jamaica's creative and cultural sectors. She has also made significant contributions to the growth of the dancehall and reggae music scenes in Jamaica, Canada, and the US.

Ms Grange played a key role in developing legislative proposals in Jamaica to encourage the growth of the cultural industries and advance "brand Jamaica" in the global market as a founder member and Director of the Jamaica Association of Composers, Authors and Publishers (JACAP).  She also contributed to the creation of Jamaica's copyright laws.

She was the Chief Executive Officer of Specs Limited and Spec-Shang Music and co-founded Contrast, Canada's first black community newspaper.

She also worked as the Executive Director of the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), the Institute of Jamaica's Arts Officer, the Cultural Director of the West Kingston Community Cultural Development Program, and the West Kingston Trust's Public Relations Officer.

In her long career as a lawmaker and community activist, Minister Grange has dedicated herself to the advancement of women's and children's issues, with a special emphasis on job development and better health care.

In short, Honorable Olivia "Babsy" Grange, is an icon and champion of Jamaica and her efforts have not gone unrecognized.
