Toni-Ann Singh, born 3 February 1996, was previously crowned Miss Jamaica World 2019 and is Jamaica's fourth Miss World winner. She is also the longest-reigning Miss World in the pageant's history.
Singh was born in Jamaica's Morant Bay. She is of Dougla descent (Caribbean people who are of mixed African and Asiatic Indian descent), with her mother being Afro-Jamaican and her father being Indo-Jamaican.
Singh's family immigrated to the United States when she was nine, settling in Florida. She graduated from Florida State University in Tallahassee with a degree in women's studies and psychology.
Singh travelled to London in November 2019 to participate in Miss World pre-pageant activities. Singh finished in the top 40 of the Top Model competition and won the talent competition, earning her a spot in the top 40 semifinals.
On the 14th of December, at ExCeL London, Singh advanced from the top 40 to the top 12, and finally to the top five.
During the top 5 questions and answer round, Piers Morgan asked her, "Why should you win the title of Miss World 2019?" Toni then responded to the question by saying:
“I think I represent something special...a generation of women who are pushing forward to change the world. I don't consider myself better than any other girls on the stage, but I will say that my passion for women and making sure that they have had the same opportunities that I have had, is something that sets me apart”.
She was then asked, "Who is the most inspiring woman in the world for you?" to which she expressed:
“The most inspiring woman to me is my mother. Now I must say if my mother and my father are the roots, and I'm the tree, then really, any work that I do, anything that I'm able to change in the world...It is the fruits of their labour and I watched her pour everything into me, even at the sacrifice of her own wants and her needs, and that's why I am able to sit before you today”.
She was crowned Miss World 2019 by outgoing titleholder Vanessa Ponce of Mexico, beating out first runner-up Ophély Mézino of France and second runner-up Suman Rao of India.
With her victory, Singh became the fourth Jamaican woman to hold the title, the last being Lisa Hanna in 1993, and the first black woman to win Miss World since Agbani Darego of Nigeria in 2001.
Her victory also marked the first time in history that black women won two of the world's most prestigious beauty pageant titles after Zozibini Tunzi became South Africa's first black woman to win Miss Universe.
Singh, who won the Miss World title in December 2019, is the competition's longest-reigning titleholder. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Miss World pageant was postponed to 2020, extending Singh's reign.
The big 70th anniversary celebrations have been pushed back to 2021. However, just hours before the grand finale in December, a postponement was announced, promising that the coronation would take place within the next 90 days.
Due to the COVID-19 outbreak in Puerto Rico, the pageant was rescheduled for March 16, 2022, and at the conclusion of the event, Toni-Ann Singh of Jamaica crowned Karolina Bielawska of Poland as Miss World 2021.
