Contest Entry #038 - Rastaman Lloyd
This picture was taken in January of 2011. I had gone to Jamaica with my mom and a few of her friends. This was my first trip to Jamaica, but I was ready!
I had done my research and was ready to see more than just the resorts and tourist traps! So, we called Yogi! Yogi is a cab driver in Montego Bay that we were referred to by some people in my home town in Ohio. (My hometown has a population of about 20,000).
Apparently, Yogi had lived in Tiffin and worked here for a few years until his work Visa ran out and he had to return to Jamaica. (Yogi now takes his vacation here, while we go to Jamaica!...small world!)
Anyway, Yogi picked us up and I told him that I wanted to see some off the beaten path things. He took us up in the mountains and thru several small villages. That is where I met Lloyd!
Lloyd has a small fruit stand on the side of the road. He was so happy to talk to us and show us what he was selling.
He even let us try a few of the items we weren't familiar with. Of course, he took a small bite first to show that it was safe.
Lloyd was wearing a crocheted cap. I knew he must have had dreads hiding up there.
So, not knowing the etiquette, I asked if it was proper to ask him to take off his hat.
Of course, he answered with a "ya mon!"
He took his hat off and his dreads were almost longer than he was! He was a genuinely happy person!
We exchanged mailing addresses and when I got home, I printed the pic that I took with Lloyd and mailed it to him with a thank you card.
Thanking him for taking his time to answer all of the silly questions from some random foreigner ...me!
About six months later, I received an envelope in the mail. It was from Lloyd, in very shaky handwriting. I was so excited to hear from him, but when I opened the envelope, there was nothing inside :-) !
I'm not sure if he knew how to write, but he tried!!! I'm still hoping to run into him again someday!
