Before we jump in, lets talk about Jamaican puddings versus American puddings. The main difference lies in the ingredients and preparation methods. While American puddings are often creamy and made with milk, eggs, and sugar, Jamaican puddings take a unique twist. They are heartier, denser, and packed with tropical goodness.
Cornmeal pudding, often hailed as a quintessential Jamaican dessert, is a celebration of simplicity and taste. It's made from cornmeal (ground maize), coconut milk, spices like nutmeg and cinnamon and sweetened with brown sugar. The mixture is baked to perfection, resulting in a dense, moist, and flavorful pudding that captures the essence of Jamaica.
In a debate about which Jamaican pudding is the best, the sweet potato pudding usually come out the winner because of it' naturally sweeter taste. Sweet potato pudding is a delightful treat that showcases the versatility of this beloved root vegetable. Grated sweet potatoes are combined with coconut milk, spices, and sugar, creating a luscious pudding that melts in your mouth. The natural sweetness of the sweet potatoes shines through, making it a favourite among locals and visitors alike.
Coconut pudding, oh, where do I begin? It's a tropical paradise in every bite! Grated coconut, mixed with coconut milk, spices, and sometimes a hint of rum, creates a velvety concoction that's pure bliss. The richness of coconut gives this pudding a luxurious texture, and the aroma is simply irresistible.
Carrot pudding, is not as popular but is certainly on the rise. Like the others, grated carrots are combined with flour, spices, and coconut milk, resulting in a vibrant and flavorful pudding. It is similar in taste to our well loved carrot cake, but is much more dense. The natural sweetness of carrots, combined with the richness of coconut, makes this dessert a delightful surprise for your taste buds.
In general, you can find our most common puddings, sweet potato and cornmeal, pretty much anywhere that has a pastry window, supermarkets and even street vendors. However when it comes to the best pudding, without a doubt most Jamaicans will tell you to head to the pudding man in Priory, St. Ann. And yes, he is known as โ The Pudding Manโ. He canโt be missed either, he is right by the street side and with several coal stoves, lining the curb. He doesnโt only sell cornmeal and potato puddings either, he creates a range of flavours including, banana, pumpkin, carrot and cassava.
Another location that has been said to guarantee you a good slice of pudding is the renowned Devon House, so while you are there for a tour of the grounds or to grab Jamaican favourite ice cream, stop by their bakery for a slice of potato pudding too.
Whether you're savouring the hearty goodness of cornmeal pudding, indulging in the creamy delight of sweet potato pudding, luxuriating in the tropical paradise of coconut pudding, or enjoying the vibrant flavours of carrot pudding, you're in for a treat that will tantalize your taste buds and leave you craving for more.
