The prestigious award ceremony, held on June 29, took place at Kings House, the official residence of the Governor General of Jamaica. But what was she awarded for?
Good question! Here's the citation that was read for her verbatim...
Ms. Karena Gayle, has used the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic to contribute meaningfully to her community. Known for her unflagging commitment to the well-being of others, Karena has made a considerable impact by helping disadvantaged students access educational resources online.
Demonstrating true volunteerism, Karena provided invaluable aid to students preparing for their Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) exams. She spent a three-month period tutoring students from several schools, including on ensuring that these students had a solid foundation in the sciences and as Montego Bay High, Mount Alvernia High and Green Pond High.
Her tutelage focused testament to her effective teaching, every student she tutored passed their CSEC continues to assist her community by offering English and Mathematics lessons to exams.
Although she no longer runs these science classes within schools, Karena those in need.
In exemplifying strong leadership skills, Karena has served as a Senior Prefect at Mount Alvernia High School and as a Student Council Representative at both Montego Bay High and Mount Alvernia High.
In these roles, she participated in numerous outreach programmes and drives, providing essentials like books, sanitary products, food and clothing to orphans in need. Karena was also the Secretary for the New Irwin Moravian Church's Youth Fellowship Group and President of the Tourism Action Club, and she served as Public Relations Officer for the Interact Club at Montego Bay High, engaging in various cleanup and outreach initiatives.
Ms. Gayle's achievement extends to her academics, where she has consistently excelled. She earned twelve CSEC distinctions and four Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) distinctions, and was recognized as one of the top ten regional awardees for both English Literature and Religious Education in the CSEC.
She also received a Top 5 National Award at the CSEC level for these same subjects.
For the 2021-2022 academic year, she was on the Principal's Honour Roll at Mount Alvernia High and was named the top student in her twelfth-grade class.
Furthermore, she has been a member of the Gold Club for five consecutive years, maintaining an average of 80 per cent and above.
Ms. Karena Gayle's accomplishments are a testament to her unwavering dedication to personal growth, academic excellence and community service.
Ms. Karena Gayle, it is with pride and confidence that The Governor-General's Achievement Awards Committee of St. James has selected you as a worthy recipient of The Governor-General's Achievement Awards for Excellence, 2023.

Well in just weeks after receiving this esteemed award, she entered, and won (amidst a field of brilliant and talented young ladies) the Miss St. James Festival Queen in Montego Bay๐.
