On the third Monday of October, every year, Jamaicans show their appreciation for our seven national heroes.
These heroes are viewed as inspiring symbols of national pride and strength.
The only problem says Mervyn Weir, a British artist, designer, writer and filmmaker of Jamaican heritage, is that when you see how the national heroes are portrayed, the images are dated, black and white and inconsistent.
Not only that, there are no contemporary heroes and only one woman. In the run up to the 60th anniversary of Jamaican Independence, Mervyn decided to create a new set of stunning portraits but uniquely depicted in the national colours.
“We live in a world surrounded by so called heroes, says Mervyn, “most obviously the fictitious superheroes that dominate our cinema screens.
But we’re living in a time when the world is revising who our heroes should be, with famous statues being removed and replaced.
As Jamaica celebrates its 60th anniversary of independence, it is a good time to reflect on our existing national heroes and also ask, who should be added to the official list?
Heroes can come from anywhere - our parents, community leaders or teachers can all be sources of inspiration.
But if we’re going to honour and value Jamaica’s national heroes who all fought, and some died, for Jamaica’s freedom and independence, this seems like a good time to update their portraits.”
