The stinking toe is highly underrated and many choose to completely ignore it. But it is packed with nutritional benefits and would be a great addition to any diet. One of the main reasons it is avoided is because of its unpleasant smell.

But like most Jamaican foods and fruits, the stinking toe can be made into a delicious drink. This drink is not only filled with vitamins and minerals, it is a great way to make the smelly fruit more palatable.

As a matter of fact, you can use the stinking toe to make a punch that consists of a variety of other vegetables or you can use it to make a simple drink, where the stinking toe is the only star.

Here are a few things you should know or consider before making your stinking toe beverages:

  1. The stinking toe has to be mature or ripe to be used to make this drink. You will know that the stinking toe is ready by its dark brown hard outer shell.

  2. The shell cannot be used in the making of the drink. The shell must be removed.
  3. Lightly sweetened as you go, while preparing the drink. Stinking toe is naturally sweet, so you may not need many sweeteners.

  4. The stinking toe is very flexible, you can add pretty much any vegetable or fruit to it to make a delicious drink.

  5. There is not much information on the possible negative effects of the stinking toe fruit but to avoid any possibilities ensure the pulp of the fruit is safe to be eaten.

  6. The pulp of the fruit should always be soft and have a yellow to light brown colour.

Jamaican Stinking Toe Punch Recipe

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 pound Stinking Toe Fruit
  • ¼ pound Pumpkin
  • ¼ pound of Irish Potatoes
  • 1 ripe Banana
  • ½ dozen Okra
  • 1 Turmeric Root
  • ½ cup Peanut
  • ½ cup Oats
  • ½ can/tin Condensed Milk
  • 1 dragon stout
  • 1 Vanilla Extracted
  • ½ teaspoon Nutmeg powder
  • Water
  • ¼ cup white rum

PROCEDURE

  1. The first thing, of course, is to prep your stinking toes. They are the star of the show after all. Remove the hard outer shell by breaking it. You can use whatever get’s the job done. Once you have got it open, remove the soft flesh of the fruit and place it in a bowl and set it aside.

  2. Peel, wash and cut your Irish potatoes into medium sizes. Remove the seeds from your pumpkin, wash it and cut it into pieces without removing the skin. Add both to a pot and boil until soft. Drain and set aside.

  3. Move on to your okras; simply wash them and add them to a pot, boil for no longer than 10 minutes. Drain and set aside.

  4. In a blender, add the stinking toes, your boiled Irish potatoes, pumpkin and okras. Also add the oats, ripe banana, turmeric root and raw peanuts at this time. Blend with water on high speed until completely smooth.

  5. This is a punch and is meant to be a bit thick, so do not strain the mixture. Pure into a juice container and add the dragon stout, condensed milk, nutmeg powder, vanilla extract and white rum. Mix vigorously for a few minutes. Alternatively, you can choose to add all these ingredients to your blender before pouring your drink into the container.

  6. Do a taste test and add more of anything you may need.

Set it in the refrigerator to chill for a while then serve with ice and a sprinkle of cinnamon powder on top.

This stinking toe drink is absolutely delicious, it is filling, and quite healthy as well. If you prefer something more simple you can choose to just add your stinking toe pulps to a blender with some nutmeg powder and blend with water. Sweetening afterwards with just sugar.

Either way, you will be left with a delicious tasting and healthy drink that both adults and children alike will enjoy. Share with your friends and families of course.
