Many times, once we have our passport, it is so easy to forget that it doesn’t last forever, and we will need to get it renewed. So, if you need to make an appointment for your Jamaican passport renewal, here are some of the most frequently asked questions and answers that you may want to know.

What do I need to renew my Jamaica passport?
Renewing your passport can be quite simple, all you need are the following documents:
- Birth certificate or any other document that can prove you are a citizen of Jamaica.
- The expired passport or almost expired.
- Two passport-sized photos, one of which must be certified by the official who certified the passport renewal form.
How much does it cost to renew a Jamaican passport?
To renew your Jamaican Passport, the cost as an adult is $6,500 or USD 80 for the regular service. The rush services are a bit more expensive but, this allows you to get your passport faster. The charges are $9,500, $11,500 and $16,500.
If you are looking to renew the passport of a minor, child under the age of 18, the regular service charge is $4000 or 50 USD. Rush rates are $6000, $7000 and $9000.
Can I renew my Jamaican passport online?
Yes, you can, in some cases at least. Passport renewal is only available online to adults who have had their Jamaican passports issued after September 2001. If your passport was issued before that date, you will need to go through the traditional route of filling out a physical application form and submitting it in person. If you are living overseas, you will need to visit the closest Jamaican Consulate in your area.
What do I need to renew my Jamaican Passport online?
One of the most exciting things for Jamaicans is finally having government agencies offer their services online so the tedious, long lines can be avoided. So, here are the things you will need to successfully carry out your online application for passport renewal:
- A working computer with internet access.
- A Web Browser, preferably Internet Explorer between versions 9 and 11 or Chrome version 54.0.2840.99
- Your current/expired passport
- A digital passport size photograph stored on a computer
- A valid Master or Visa card for payment
- A valid and working email address to receive system-generated messages.
- A Portable Data Format (PDF) reader
- A working printer to view and print the system-generated application form in A4-size paper. You may print your application and submit same at any PICA Office in Jamaica.
Can I renew my Jamaican passport before it expires?
Yes, you can absolutely get your Jamaican passport renewal done before it expires. Understandably, you would like to have your passport renewed before the official expiration date as you never know when you will need to make urgent travel arrangements, and the passport renewal process can take a while, sometimes up to 8 weeks. Fortunately, Jamaican passport holders are allowed to begin the passport renewal process an entire year before their passport is officially expired.
Can I travel to Jamaica with an expired Jamaican passport?
Yes, you can. As long as you are a Jamaican citizen, you will be allowed to enter the island with an expired passport. However, you will not be able to leave using the same expired one. You will therefore be required to either renew your passport before entering the island or you can opt to do so while you are on the island.
How long does it take to renew a Jamaican passport in Jamaica?
The basic waiting time for passport renewal is 6 to 8 weeks. However, the wait times vary based on location. Those who opt for rushed services will have a shorter waiting time.

- Kingston - 7 workings days
- Montego Bay - 14 working days
- Portmore & May Pen Tax Offices - 11 and 14 days respectively
- Overseas applications - 20 working days upon receipt in Kingston

- Three Working Days
- Next Day
- Same Day
Can you expedite a Jamaican passport?
Yes, however, this is only offered in the following locations:
- May Pen
- Montego Bay
- Mandeville
- Portmore
- St. Ann’s Bay
Expedited services can be for either 7 or 5 days (not business days).
For adults:
- 7 days expedited service - $9500
- 5 days expedited service - $11,500
While for minors:
- 7 days expedited service - $6000
- 5 days expedited service - $7000
How do I check the status of my Jamaican passport renewal?
If you started your passport application online using the Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency (PICA) official website, you will be able to check the status of your passport by:
- visiting their website.
- Selecting passport then renew
- Select online (adult only)
- Select check status then enter your relevant information
While the process of renewing a passport can require a significant amount of patience, it is a necessity. Thankfully, the implementation of the online system has made it much easier.
