As a child, I was an extremely picky eater. Many of our traditional dishes would not make it past my lips. I am talking about ackee and saltfish, bulla and pear, crayfish soup, and many others. One of my least favourites? Gungo Peas soup. The truth is, I wouldnโt even try and absolutely refused to give it a taste.

Now, as a mature adult with developed and experienced taste buds, it has become one of my favourites. In all honesty, I donโt think this dish gets the shine it deserves in our Jamaican cuisine. Of all the Jamaican soups, pumpkin, red peas, chicken and Manish water, it is probably one of the least spoken about.
However, Gungo peas soup, made with tender gungo peas, aromatic spices, and an assortment of vegetables, is equal parts hearty and delicious. You can read about some of the wonderful benefits that gungo peas provide right here.
So, let me share with you this simple but delicious recipe for Gungo Peas soup for you to try at home. Feel free to adjust it as you wish by using your choice of meat or leaving it out altogether for a delicious vegan option.
This soup is typically made with beef, but chicken neck, chicken foot and cow skin are also popular.
- Add the different ingredients for the soup in series. First, add the beef and gungo peas and allow them to cook until you can crush the peas with a fork. Next, add vegetable broth, coconut milk, cubed potato, and yam.
- Add the prepared dumplings to the soup. These dumplings add a wonderful texture to the dish and soak up the flavours of the broth.
- Include the diced carrot, dried thyme (or fresh thyme sprigs), and the whole Scotch Bonnet pepper. Be cautious while handling it, as it packs a lot of heat, and do not allow it to burst open in the pot. Also, add the pimento/allspice seeds and freshly grated ginger for an extra layer of flavour. Add all your remaining spices and herbs to the pot as well.
Indulge your senses in the warmth and spice of Jamaican Gungo Peas Soup. This dish not only excites the taste buds but it is also packed with necessary nutrients. Serve it with love, and relish the authentic flavours that capture the essence of Jamaican culinary tradition. Ofcourse, you will also need to share this recipe with your friends and family then you can try these other recipes in our ebook.
