Streaming has changed the way we watch and listen to movies, shows, music and other forms of entertainment forever. Now we have access to a vast collection of music or shows on the go from our favourite streaming platform.
But will you have access to these on vacation in Jamaica?
Netflix certainly is available in Jamaica and it is by far the most popular movie streaming platform in Jamaica. As you are most likely well aware, the movies on Netflix are not all available to every region.
So what you will quickly find out is that if you have “American Netflix” meaning you signed up for Netflix in America or used your American credentials, you will have access to the shows available there. But if you were to look through the “Jamaican Netflix” there would be some differences.
This does not mean you would have to sign up in Jamaica when you get here for it to work though, so don’t worry about it.
If Hulu is your streaming platform of choice, then it is unfortunate, you will be unable to access the site or app while on vacation in Jamaica. This is due to Hulu not yet being licenced to operate outside of the US.
Although you may already have a Hulu account, chances are you will receive a “not available in the region” type message. Even when using a VPN it is often still difficult to access Hulu outside of the US region.
Disney Plus is now available in Jamaica and so far there are no region-based releases. All the Disney content on the app is available to all countries as long as you have an account.
Yes, Amazon Prime is available in Jamaica.
HBO Max is available in Jamaica. Local internet providers, Flow and Digicel also have packages which include HBO Max.
No, Paramount+ is not yet available in Jamaica. But it can be used most times with a VPN. Local cable television, internet and telephone service company Flow has Paramount+ as one of their offerings in their TV bundle.
No, YouTube TV is not available outside of the United States.
While you asked specifically about movie/show streaming sites, it would be beneficial to include music streaming sites as well.
Apple Music, Soundcloud, Deezer and most recently, Spotify are all available in Jamaica.
YouTube Music is not available in our region but it can be used with a VPN.
VPNs have become increasingly popular over the years and if you are a frequent watcher of YouTube you have probably seen an ad or heard a content creator advertise it. A VPN or Virtual Private Network is used to establish a protected network connection when using public networks.
Real-time encryption makes it harder for third parties to access your activities online and steal your data.
There are many benefits to using a VPN including online safety and disguising your whereabouts, but it is popular when talking about streaming since it gives you access to regional content.
For streaming services that are only available in some countries or those that have different shows/movies for each region or country VPNs work well as it gives you access to all these regions with just one account.
For persons who travel a lot and want to keep up to date with their favourite weekly show on Netflix, it might not work while you are out of the country and if you found a show you love while abroad, you might not be able to watch it when you head back home.
The VPN allows you to “change your location” to access content from other parts of the world.
The closest thing I can think of to a streaming site in Jamaica is TVJ’s 1Spot media which gives you access to their radio and television stations on the go. They also have Jamaican plays, programmes, series and documentaries on pay-per-view.
I hope this helps. Streaming services are always expanding to wider markets so hopefully, I will be able to say there are other services available in Jamaica as well.
