Bob Marley's iconic song "Could You Be Loved” by Bob Marley and the Wailers was released in 1980 as part of the album Uprising. It is a soothing and timeless piece that is right up there in my all-time favourite Bob Marley Songs.

I sometimes wonder if it is intentional, the way Bob Marley wrote some of the most amazing songs, they would sound so complex but when dissected they were complex with all the themes that they explode. In that sense "Could You Be Loved" was like most of his other songs with its infectious rhythm and upbeat tempo, exploring themes of love, unity, legacy and more. So let’s talk about it.
But first, let’s look at the song lyrics.
[Chorus: Bob Marley]
Could you be loved and be love?
Could you be loved and be love?
[Verse 1: Bob Marley]
Don't let them fool ya
Or even try to school ya! Oh, no!
We've got a mind of our own
So go to hell, if what you're thinking isn't right!
Love would never leave us alone
A-in the darkness, there must come out to light
[Chorus: Bob Marley]
Could you be loved and be love?
Could you be loved, woah, yeah
And be loved?
[Bridge: I Threes]
The road of life is rocky and you may stumble too
So while you point your fingers someone else is judging you
[Refrain: Bob Marley & I Threes]
Love your brotherman!
Could you be, could you be, could you be loved?
Could you be, could you be loved?
Could you be, could you be, could you be loved?
Could you be, could you be loved?
[Verse 2: Bob Marley & I Threes]
Don't let them change ya, oh!
Or even rearrange ya!
Oh, no!
We've got a life to live
(Ooh, ooh, ooh)
They say, only, only
Only the fittest of the fittest shall survive
Stay alive, eh
[Chorus: Bob Marley]
Could you be loved and be loved?
Could you be loved, woah yeah!
And be loved?
[Bridge: I Threes]
Never miss your water until your well runs dry
No matter how you treat him, the man will never be satisfied
[Outro: Bob Marley & I Threes]
Say something! (Could you be, could you be, could you be loved? Could you be, could you be loved?)
Say something! Say something!
(Could you be, could you be, could you be loved?)
Say something!
Say something! Say something! Say something!
Say something! Say something! (Could you be loved?)
Say something! Say something! Reggae, reggae!
Say something! Rockers, rockers!
Say something! Reggae, reggae!
Say something! Rockers, rockers!
Say something! (Could you be loved?)
Say something! Uh!
Say something! Come on!
Say something! (Could you be, could you be, could you be loved?)
Say something! (Could you be, could you be loved?)
Say something! (Could you be, could you be, could you be loved?)
Say something!
Say something
As I mentioned earlier, “Could You Be Loved” explored several themes and different aspects of our day-to-day lives that we all experience at one point or another. This is why his songs always hit so close to home and pull on our heartstrings. Let’s look at some of those themes I’m talking about:
You know, one of the things that makes Bob Marley’s music so powerful is how he weaves in themes of resistance and individuality. In "Could You Be Loved," he’s basically telling us not to let anyone mess with our heads or try to shape who we are. "Don't let them fool ya, Or even try to school ya!" he boldly declares, pushing us to stay true to ourselves and what we believe in.
Life can be tough, but Marley always had this way of reminding us to stay hopeful. He sings, "Love would never leave us alone, A-in the darkness, there must come out to light," which is his way of saying that love will always find a way, even in the darkest times. It’s that kind of optimism that really makes his lyrics stand out.
And then there’s the social commentary. Marley wasn’t afraid to call out judgment and hypocrisy. "The road of life is rocky, And you may stumble too," he warns, nudging us to think twice before pointing fingers at others. Instead, he’s all about unity and understanding, reminding us to "Love your brotherman!" It’s a message that never gets old.
Now, let’s talk about the music itself. "Could You Be Loved" is this amazing blend of reggae with a bit of funk and rock thrown in. You’ve got the guitars, bass, drums, and that cool Brazilian cuíca sound giving it a unique vibe. It’s no wonder the song did so well on international charts—Marley knew how to create a groove that sticks with you.
The song’s legacy speaks for itself. It’s a standout track on Marley’s greatest-hits album Legend and even made it onto Rolling Stone’s "500 Best Songs of All Time" list. Decades later, its message of love, unity, and social consciousness is still resonating with people all over the world. That’s the power of Marley’s music.
At its core, "Could You Be Loved" by Bob Marley isn’t just a song—it’s a lyrical and musical masterpiece that really reflects what Marley was all about. It’s all about embracing love, celebrating who you are, and standing strong against any kind of oppression. That’s why it’s become a timeless anthem that resonates across generations.
With its powerful lyrics and catchy rhythm, "Could You Be Loved" is a perfect example of Bob Marley's lasting influence on music and his deep connection to people everywhere. It’s a track that continues to touch hearts and minds all around the world.
