The two are the oldest banks in the Caribbean, which is a distinction shared by both. Since the era of salt cod and rum, they had contributed to the growth of the area. Since then, numerous changes have been made. The new export is tourism, and West Indian companies are now competing globally.
FirstCaribbean is helping to achieve that objective. In 2002, the Caribbean operations of Barclays Bank PLC and CIBC West Indies Holdings merged to form FirstCaribbean. FirstCaribbean's majority shareholder, CIBC, acquired Barclays' stake in the company in December 2006.
They proudly announced on June 20, 2011, that they would be co-branding with CIBC and using the name CIBC FirstCaribbean. The addition of CIBC to the FirstCaribbean brand highlights CIBC's dedication to the Caribbean region, its people, and its customers over the long term.
The long-term investment CIBC is making in the Caribbean, which dates back to the opening of their first branches in 1920, will continue to benefit both their clients and employees there.
The CIBC group of companies has continued to run CIBC FirstCaribbean as a Caribbean-managed business. It trades on the Barbados and Trinidad stock exchanges as FirstCaribbean International Bank Limited.
They now have 14 locations across the island.
They have several different services:
