A part of the problem was that in most cases, if you want to communicate back home, you would have to use the resort phone.

But the hotels typically charge an exorbitant amount - never mind the challenge for your relatives to get back to you.

We do have call card/credit here in Jamaica but call boxes are almost extinct now - everyone here uses a cellphone.

One trend we noticed is that some travellers bring their smart phone, but they usually get a 'bill shock' when they return.
