What is Bitcoin?

You can buy, sell, and exchange bitcoin without a middleman like a bank. It is a decentralised digital currency. Satoshi Nakamoto, the person who invented Bitcoin, first articulated the need for "an electronic payment system based on cryptographic proof instead of trust." Bitcoin's value has significantly increased since its initial public release in 2009.

Despite once selling for less than $150 per coin, as of June 8, 1 BTC is equivalent to roughly $30,200. Many anticipate that its price will only increase over time because there are only 21 million coins available.

This is especially true as more significant institutional investors start using it as digital gold to protect against inflation and market volatility. There are currently more than 19 million coins in use.

Is Bitcoin legal in Jamaica?

Since cryptocurrency is not specifically defined or regulated by Jamaica's legal system, it is not expressly forbidden in the country. The Bank of Jamaica stated in July 2021 informing people that cryptocurrencies are not accepted as legal tender in Jamaica. These types of digital currencies are not regulated or overseen by the Bank of Jamaica.

Can Jamaicans purchase Bitcoin?

Yes, of course. You will first need to find online bitcoin exchange services, that will exchange your JMD for Bitcoin and there are several of them to choose from. You will also need to get a bitcoin wallet.

How much is a Bitcoin in Jamaican dollars?

Currently, 1 bitcoin is equivalent to 2,928,961.94 Jamaican dollars.

How to buy Bitcoin in Jamaica?

  1. In some countries such as the United States and Canada, you will find what is called Bitcoin ATMs. The setup time for purchasing bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies in Jamaica is typically less than 10 minutes. Registration with a platform, app, or exchange is the first step, followed by a Know Your Customer (KYC) process.

  2. To finish the KYC process, provide a passport, national identity card, or driver's license.

  3. Public Wi-Fi is not advised because it could present security issues despite being a private and secure internet connection.

  4. A mobile device that uses two-factor authentication to confirm your identity (2FA).

  5. A bank account or credit card that can be used to deposit fiat money before buying cryptocurrencies, a crypto wallet where you can keep your money. Nearly all exchanges will provide built-in wallets, but for maximum security, it is crucial to withdraw your cryptocurrency to your own private cold wallet.

What are some Bitcoin Exchanges available in Jamaica?

  1. FTX- Launched in 2019, FTX is one of the most rapidly expanding centralized cryptocurrency exchanges. It supports over 300 digital assets and has cutting-edge features like derivatives, options, leveraged tokens, and futures and margin trading.

  2. Prime XBT- Using a bank transfer, Visa, Mastercard, or stablecoins, PrimeXBT enables you to purchase Bitcoin, Ethereum, or stablecoins in your home currency. Once your account has been funded, you can use its trading platform to invest in cryptocurrencies, foreign exchange, commodities, and stock indices.

    As an alternative, you can use its platform to passively invest by imitating other wealthy investors. Last but not least, use your cryptocurrency's staking program to generate passive income.|

  3. LocalBitcoins- Launched in 2012, LocalBitcoins is a reputable peer-to-peer marketplace. Through the website's classified ads, get in touch with people who are directly looking to buy or sell Bitcoin. With its escrow service, every transaction is secured, so you can buy or sell with confidence. After purchase, you can safely store your Bitcoins in your LocalBitcoins wallet.
