His first plantation was cultivating ground provisions and cocoa plants, but most Jamaican planters switched to sugar cane after the disease took over the cocoa plant in Jamaica. The Worthy Park Estate made the switch as well.
Worthy Park has changed owners multiple times over the years until it finally rested in the hands of its current owners, the Clarke family. Federick L. Clarke bought the property in 1918 for ยฃ44, 000.
Though the rum produced by the estate is relatively new to the market today, Worthy Park has records proving that its rum distillery long before all other distilleries still in operation today. However, rum production was halted in the 1960s as per an agreement with the government. There was an oversupply of Jamaican Rum following World War II, and the decision was made for some rum distilleries to take a step back.
In 2005, Worthy Park invested in a state-of-the-art distillery to resume the tradition of rum production in Jamaica and reenter the Jamaican rum market.
By 2007, they released their white rum contender, Rum-Bar. It was so named for the watering holes that scatter Jamaican communities and roadsides all over the island, the backbone of Jamaican culture. It is currently one of the island's most popular white rum brands.
Ten years later, the Single Estate Reserve was launched. The dark blend of 100% copper pot-still rum had been ageing since the rebirth of the Worthy Park distillery โ 6-10 years. The natural light amber-coloured liquid has the distinct aromas of tobacco, spicy fruits and warm vanilla.
Worthy Park distributes under 2 brands in Jamaica, Worthy Park and Rum Bar. These are the products.
The 45% ABV amber gold rum was the first release from the Worthy Park line.
This limited edition released was aged from 2006 until it was bottled in 2018. There are no additives in the deep amber rum with 56% ABV.
This is a double-matured pot-stilled rum. First, it was aged for 8 years in American Oak Barrels before being transferred to an Ex-Ruby Port cask to deepen the complexity of the rum. It has an ABV of 45%.
Also double matured, this was distilled in 2010, first in American White Oak Ex-Bourbon casks for 8 years. Followed by a Madeira cask for 2 years. For another 2 years, an Ex-Madeira cask was used to add depth to the rum. It was bottled with an ABV of 45%.
This caramel rum was aged in Ex-Bourbon Casks for 8 years, then in Continental Aged for a year in Port Casks. This one is a very limited edition as 585 bottles were distilled. It has an ABV of 56%.
This rum is a blend that has been aged for up to 3 years and has an ABV of 54%. The deep, full-bodied, pot-stilled rum has notes of banana, pineapple and orange on the nose and palate with small hints of warm vanilla, toffee and caramel. It is perfect for creating stellar cocktails.
This rum has an ABV of 57%. It was double matured first for 4 years in Ex-Bourbon Casks followed by 1 year Continental Aged in a Madeira Wine Cask. There are only 677 bottles available.
Only 319 bottles were ever released of this double matured rum. It was 4 years Tropical Aged in Ex-Bourbon barrels followed by 1 year tropical aged in Marsala wine cask and has an ABV of 60%.
Aged for 4 years Tropical Aged in Ex-Bourbon barrels then for 1 year tropical aged in Oloroso Sherry Cask the 59% ABV rum only has 428 bottles available.
The vintage 2013, is a blend of Sherry casks that have aged for 4 years in Ex-Bourbon Casks followed by 1 year Continental Aged in PX Sherry and Oloroso Casks which were then blended together.
The Worthy Park rum cream is made from 100% real cream which is then combined with a 4-year-old aged rum for the perfect balance.
While Worthy park is not as popular in Jamaica, it is incredibly popular in Europe. These are the countries Worthy Park is distributed to the outside of Jamaica.
If you would like to take a tour of the rum distillery, then you can! Worthy Park has joined the likes of Appleton Estate and Hampden Estate to add a tour of the grounds to their list of products and services.
