I know one of Jamaica’s biggest tourism selling points is our sandy beaches, warm climate and exciting outdoor activities and excursions. None of which is possible to be enjoyed if it’s raining.
But let me be the one to assure you, regardless of it raining you will still be able to have a great time. Even if it rained for days in Jamaica, you could still have a fun and memorable trip.
A rainy day in Jamaica doesn't have to mean a wasted day. It can be an opportunity to discover the island’s rich culture, history, and indoor attractions that might otherwise go unnoticed. Where to start?
Try our museums, we have several museums and galleries island-wide that will take you on a deep dive into our history, art and culture.
- Bob Marley Museum: Located at 56 Hope Road in Kingston, this museum is dedicated to the reggae legend Bob Marley. It’s housed in his former home and offers a unique glimpse into his life and career, complete with personal artefacts, photographs, and memorabilia.
The brightly coloured building is covered in paintings of Marley performing, and inside, guests can explore a theatre, a gallery of pictures, and a store selling trinkets and souvenirs.
- National Gallery of Jamaica: Also in Kingston, this gallery showcases an extensive collection of Jamaican art, from the pre-Columbian era to contemporary works. It’s a perfect place to immerse yourself in the island’s artistic heritage.
- Jamaica Music Museum: Situated in the capital, this museum celebrates Jamaica's rich musical history, featuring exhibits on reggae, ska, mento, and dancehall.
Rainy days and good food go hand in hand.
- Cooking Classes: Many resorts and local chefs offer cooking classes where you can learn to make traditional Jamaican dishes like jerk chicken, ackee and saltfish, and rum cake. It’s a fun and interactive way to spend a rainy afternoon.
- Rum Tasting: Visit one of Jamaica’s renowned rum distilleries, such as the Appleton or Hampden Estates, for a guided tour and tasting session. Learn about the rum-making process and sample some of the finest spirits in the Caribbean.
Relax! Take advantage of the rain to pamper yourself.
- Spas and Wellness Centers: Many of Jamaica’s luxury resorts and hotels feature world-class spas. Treat yourself to a relaxing massage, facial, or a variety of other wellness treatments that will leave you feeling rejuvenated.
- Yoga and Meditation: Some resorts offer indoor yoga and meditation classes, providing a peaceful retreat from the rain. It’s an excellent way to unwind and connect with your inner self.
Rainy days provide the perfect opportunity to engage with Jamaica's vibrant culture.
- Live Music and Entertainment: Many hotels and resorts host live music performances, featuring local bands and artists. Enjoy the sounds of reggae, dancehall, and ska in an intimate indoor setting.
- Theatre Performances: Check out local theatres for performances that highlight Jamaican drama and comedy. The Little Theatre in Kingston is known for its engaging productions and cultural showcases.
- Craft Markets and Souvenir Shops: Spend time browsing local crafts, artwork, and souvenirs at indoor markets and shops. It’s a great way to pick up unique gifts and mementoes from your trip.
Jamaica offers a variety of indoor attractions that can be enjoyed regardless of the weather.
- Rose Hall Great House: Located on Rose Hall Road in Montego Bay, this Georgian-style mansion, built in 1770, has been beautifully restored. Its period furnishings, wallpapers, and luxurious chandeliers offer a fascinating contrast to the chilling story it tells.
The tours recount the lives of the slaves and the infamous white witch of Rose Hall, with candlelit night tours adding a spooky touch. Some visitors even claim to have encountered her ghost.
- Greenwood Great House: Situated at 435 Belgrade Avenue in Montego Bay, this impeccably maintained home is filled with period furnishings and artefacts, providing a clear idea of 18th-century life.
The home is associated with the poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning. After the tour, visitors can relax with a drink at the pub located inside the house.
- Blue Mountain Coffee Tour: Visit one of the coffee plantations in the Blue Mountains. Many offer indoor tours where you can learn about the coffee-making process and sample some of the world’s best coffee.
While rain might initially seem like a damper on your Jamaican vacation, it’s a wonderful opportunity to explore our indoor offerings.
From historic great houses and museums to cooking classes and live music, there’s no shortage of activities to enjoy. If any of these activities has piqued your interest let us know, you can book with us by clicking this link.
