I guess you are packing for an upcoming trip to the capital of adventure and you would love to know what is acceptable to bring. Unsurprisingly, the clothes you wear in Ocho Rios are the typical wardrobe for a tropical island.

You will have a splendid couple of days or weeks in swimsuits, shorts, activewear and summery dress. It is up to you and the vacation you plan to have.

Resort Vacation

If you are planning to stay on the property of your resort mostly, then you will need to pack swimsuits, cover-ups, flip-flops/slides, shoes and clothes suitable for semi-formal dinners at the resort.

Most resorts have dress codes for their restaurants and common areas which is where cover-ups and shorts will work during the day. At nights, it is expected that you will dress up a bit more for dinner and as such more formal wear is expected for both men and women.

You will need to pack based on the length of your vacation (how to pack for a seven-day trip, might be a great reference point). You can also pack slacks, sun dresses and comfortable shoes to wear while on the resort or to head to the town for a couple of hours on a shopping or sightseeing trip.

What is appropriate resort wear?

We would advise a dressier wardrobe while on vacation at a resort. Men can bring shirts, linen pants, slacks, collared shirts and button-downs. Slides are acceptable to wear around the resort as you are expected to be around the pool or on the beach.

But, as I mentioned before, some resorts do not relax the rules for their restaurants, especially for dinner. T-shirts, sleeveless shirts, and shorts are not typically acceptable. You may be stuck eating at the buffet every night without the proper attire.

For women, the easiest and most comfortable option is a dress and sandals (could be heeled or flat). For more casual restaurants, both parties can settle on a pair of jeans and a top.

Adventurous Vacation

If you plan to stay active throughout all the days of your vacation. Then your wardrobe might be a little different. Most of the attractions in Ocho Rios will end with you in a river, sea or falls so swimsuits are a must. But you could also have more exhilarating adventures, requiring you to wear clothes suitable for these excursions.

Lightweight clothing suited for hiking or activewear is an excellent pick for these types of activities.

You will still need a few pieces for a lovely dinner or a more laidback rest day or shopping trip. Lightweight, coloured, cotton shirts, shorts and dresses are great options. If you are heading to a fancy restaurant, the rule for shoes remains; no toe shoes for men and no flip-flops for women. Though restaurants have rules about men for denim, semi-casual wear should be okay for most.

Cruise Vacation

On cruises, you will need to pack for multiple locations. But it is highly unlikely that there will be many variations in the weather of these destinations. If Ocho Rios is one of the stops on your trip, then much like other stops through the islands or the Caribbean, you will need very comfortable clothes suitable for warm weather.

If you are planning to visit a few excursions on the trip, be sure to find out if these will be more sightseeing or active experiences as each will require a different wardrobe, inclusive of footwear. It is also entirely up to you what you decide to wear on your cruise.

What do people wear in Ocho Rios Jamaica?

Okay, let us recap. No matter the type of vacation you will be having in Ocho Rios, swimsuits, tank tops, T-Shirts, sundresses, linen pants and shorts are must-haves.

Remember Jamaica is hot so the more comfortable and breathable your clothes, the better you will feel. Skip the jeans as much as possible but bring a pair or two just in case you need them. Most places don’t mind casual but the need to dress up might arise so don't be caught off guard.
