What is the best currency to take to Jamaica? || Answered by Wellesley Gayle
The straight and clear answer is... The USD!
Yes, the US dollar, and by far too!
Yes, we have our own currency, the Jamaican Dollar, but the USD is still highly valued and accepted here, and not just cash but for non-cash transactions too, including credit and debit cards.
Above that, you may also withdraw US currency from many of the ATMs here as well.
What about the rest of the top 10 most tradable currencies?
In addition to the USD, The British Pound and Canadian Dollar are also quite popular here as well, followed by the Euro, which rounds off the top 4.
Better yet, here's a table from one of our top commercial banks, showing the top 10 trading currencies in Jamaica and their exchange rates today.
Did you notice that it includes some of our sister Caribbean currencies as well?
But make no bones about it? The one that will be easily taken in almost any business here is the USD - don't try that with the rest, lol.
So we say, take the USD? But when and where should you do your currency exchange? Read more on those, plus get some important tips in our article on what currency is accepted in Jamaica.
