Whitmore's journey in football began at an early age when he displayed remarkable talent and a natural affinity for the game. He honed his skills playing for the Seba United team in his hometown, catching the attention of talent scouts. His impressive performances led to his selection for the Jamaican national team, making his debut at the tender age of 18.

After a one-week trial with the club, he was signed on a free by English league team Hull City, where he played alongside fellow countryman Ian Goodison until an accident in Jamaica ended his Hull career.

Whitmore made his international debut for Jamaica in a November 1993 friendly game against the United States, replacing Hector Wright as a late replacement. Whitmore represented Jamaica in 105 official international matches and netted 24 goals. He played a significant role in Jamaica’s success in qualifying for their first and only World Cup in 1998. Whitmore proved just how crucial of a role he played for the Reggae Boyz in the late ‘90s by scoring the 2 goals that secured Jamaica’s solitary success of their three games in the competition. Despite being ousted in the first round, Jamaica won 2-1 against Japan. He received the Caribbean Footballer of the Year award that same year.

His final international game was also a 1-1 tie away at the United States on November 17, 2004, which was part of the 2006 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Whitmore returned to Seba United in 2006, this time as a coach as well as a player and was assigned as interim manager in November 2007. Under his direction, Jamaica triumphed in both friendlies against El Salvador and Guatemala. He was then kept on as assistant while Renê Simes' was head coach. Simes only served as manager for nine months and by September 11th, 2008, Tappa was once more named interim manager until the new manager John Barnes became available in November.

With one match left in semifinal round group play, Whitmore led the Reggae Boyz to back-to-back 1-0 victories over Mexico and Honduras in October 2008, earning him a ton of support as a manager and putting the Jamaicans in a position to progress. When John Barnes stepped down as manager in June 2009 to take over Whitmore's former English League club Tranmere Rovers, he once more assumed control of the national team. The 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup was difficult for Whitmore's team, and they were eliminated early. He guided the group to three draws and one victory at the end of 2009 as part of the national team's rebuilding initiatives, which got underway in August 2009.

Other notable points of his career include:

  • He guided Jamaica to victory in the 2010 Digicel Cup in December.
  • He left his position as head coach in June 2013 after leading Jamaica to the CONCACAF Hexagonal final round in 2012.
  • He was the Jamaican national u20 coach from December 2014 until February 2015. Whitmore was appointed as Jamaica's temporary head coach in September 2016.
  • In May 2018, Whitmore agreed to a four-year contract with the JFF but was fired in December 2021.
  • Whitmore was appointed manager of Jamaica Professional League club Mount Pleasant FA in the St. Ann Parish in 2022. He won his first domestic championship as a manager on June 11, 2023.

Beyond his individual accomplishments, Whitmore's impact on Jamaican football cannot be overstated. He serves as a role model for aspiring players, illustrating that hard work, dedication, and talent can help overcome any obstacle. His commitment to the national team and unwavering belief in its potential has been an inspiration to generations of footballers.

Off the field, Whitmore has been actively involved in community development initiatives, using football as a vehicle to empower young Jamaicans. He has provided opportunities for disadvantaged youths to pursue their dreams, emphasizing the importance of education and character development alongside sporting achievements.

Theodore Tappa Whitmore's journey from a talented young player to a revered figure in Jamaican football showcases his passion, skill, and dedication. His exploits on the field, leadership as a coach, and commitment to community development make him a true icon of the sport. Whitmore's impact on Jamaican football will continue to resonate for years to come.
