But imagine being able to pick almost anything you might need from right outside your door? That is what Eunice Watkins of Dawta Meekie is able to do. She has everything from the Jamaican favourite breadfruit to the ever-elusive Black Sapote tree. Not to mention, mangoes galore.
The actual reason for our visit was to see her product line, Rastafari Never Grow Old, a business she runs alongside her family Dawta Avriel and Tallis. But, we were distracted by her fruitful garden and just had to take a tour, so more on that later.
The Rastafarian Lifestyle is “ital” which means from the growing stages, only organic products are used to nurture plants, and then when cooking processed foods or seasonings are not included either. Rastafarians believe wholeheartedly that a farm-to-table, vegan diet should be maintained.
Her small home-based “factory” is a full operation filled with raw materials and a few machines to make her work a little easier when making her products.
And what are these products I keep referring to? Here are some of the items of the Rastafari Never Grow Old Product Line:
Ms Watkins truly believes in growing her plants organically in accordance with the teachings of her faith and so the use of chemically enhanced fertilizers or insecticides is never needed.
What does she use instead?
The ash produced from making her charcoal powder is used to sprinkle on the leaves of her plants to deter pests from damaging the leaves.
The onion peel is steeped in hot water along with the cinnamon powder and baking soda to create a chemical-free insect spray for the plants.
These two things are not marketed by Rastafari Never Grow Old but you can try them at home for your own little garden.
This also promotes sustainable living as well as recycling and repurposing to reduce waste and the effects it has on the environment.
Now, back to the many plants in Dawta Meekie’s yard. Among the many trees are:
We met Dawta Meekie at the Montpelier Agricultural Show, where they had come to showcase their innovative and healthy product line along with the many other persons working in agriculture in western Jamaica.
You can watch that video here:
You can also call and order from abroad. But for those lucky ones in Connecticut and Georgia, you won’t have to wait until it is shipped from Jamaica. The products are sold in those two states of America.
Dawta Meekie highlights Jamaica’s beauty and its abundance of organic food and natural resources as what makes Jamaica special. Don’t you agree?
You can always watch the video to get familiar with Dawta Meekie, Rastafari Never Grow Old, and all the products they have to offer.
