You might be wondering where this concept came from. Overwater, bungalows have been around for over 5 decades. The first-ever overwater bungalow was created by a group of Californian men who were known as the Bali Hai boys. They moved to the island of Tahiti in 1960, opening hotels. By 1967, they had launched the first 3 overwater bungalows, and ever since then, overwater bungalows have been on the bucket list of experiences for many persons.
Yes, we do! For years, decades actually, the Caribbean had been lagging behind as other islands like the Maldives, started developing more overwater bungalows. It has always been of interest to Adam Stewart, the Ceo of Sandals Resorts International, which is one of the leading resorts in the Caribbean for couples, attracting thousands from across the world yearly.
Adam and his wife Jill Stewart got married in 2009. His interest in overwater bungalows being at a peak, he decided to mix his honeymoon with a little business research and the couple decided to spend their honeymoon at one of the resorts in the Maldives that has overwater bungalows.
He was determined to bring them to Jamaica and closer to American travellers, who account for a huge percentage of visitors to Jamaica yearly.
Stewart and his team got to work, working through numerous regulations and legislations, and by December 01, 2016, Jamaica opened the very first set of overwater bungalows, not just in Jamaica but the Caribbean as well.
Finally! Jamaica has hopped on the trend of creating overwater bungalows. The Sandals Royal Caribbean Resort in Montego Bay had the first overwater bungalows in the Caribbean. It is located on a private island with a 24/7 hour water taxi service that will take you to the main resort whenever you want to.
There are 17 water bungalows that come together to form the shape of a heart, perfect for a romantic getaway. There are also 5 ultra-private bungalows that are called the honeymoon villas. The honeymoon villas each come with a private infinity pool.
In December 2017, just a short year after opening the door to their first overwater bungalows, Sandals South Coast which was previously named Sandals Whitehouse opened 12 overwater bungalows that also formed the shape of a heart.
Overwater bungalows are way more expensive than a typical suite, they normally start at around $2000 USD per night but that can be higher based on numerous things such as season, occupancy and duration of stay. Bungalows have to be booked way before you are ready to travel, they are in high demand and are sometimes booked out for months.
Yes! Absolutely. Overwater bungalows provide the ultimate luxury getaway. The overwater bungalows come with an elite service. Here are some of the things you get when you book an overwater bungalow:
Bungalows are built on stilts with a step leading down to the ocean, the depth is only around 2 to 5 feet deep so even a non-swimmer can enjoy it.
If you are willing to splurge, Sandals Resorts overwater bungalows will be the perfect honeymoon destination.
