While there are various types of Jamaican porridge, one that stands out is the Jamaican Plantain Porridge.

Plantains, often mistaken for bananas, are starchy fruits belonging to the banana family. Unlike bananas, plantains are typically larger, have a thicker peel, and are usually cooked before consumption. Plantains also have a high nutritional value:

  • Rich Source of Complex Carbohydrates: Plantains are an excellent source of complex carbohydrates, providing a sustained release of energy, and making them an ideal breakfast choice.
  • Dietary Fiber: High in dietary fibre, plantains aid digestion, promote a feeling of fullness, and help regulate blood sugar levels.
  • Vitamins and Minerals: They are rich in essential vitamins like vitamin C, vitamin A, and various B vitamins. Additionally, plantains contain minerals such as potassium, magnesium, and iron, essential for overall health.

The health benefits of plantains includes:

  • Digestive Health: The fibre content in plantains aids in smooth digestion, preventing constipation and promoting a healthy digestive system.
  • Heart Health: Potassium in plantains helps regulate blood pressure, reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
  • Boosted Immunity: Vitamin C in plantains boosts the immune system, enhancing the bodyโ€™s ability to fight off infections.
  • Improved Vision: Plantains are rich in vitamin A, essential for maintaining good vision and eye health.
  • Energy Booster: The high carbohydrate content provides a quick energy boost, making plantains an ideal choice for breakfast to kickstart your day.

Why Plantain Porridge Is Great for Breakfast?

  1. Filling and Satisfying: Plantain porridge, with its combination of plantains and other ingredients like coconut milk and spices, is incredibly filling, keeping you satisfied until your next meal.
  2. Balanced Nutrition: Plantain porridge offers a balanced nutritional profile, incorporating carbohydrates, proteins, and healthy fats, making it a wholesome breakfast option.
  3. Versatility: Plantain porridge can be customized with various additions like nuts, seeds, or dried fruits, enhancing its nutritional value and taste.
  4. Comforting and Delicious: Apart from its nutritional benefits, plantain porridge is a comfort food that brings warmth and joy, making it a perfect way to start your day.

There are several ways to go about making plantain porridge, but the two most popular ways to do it here in Jamaica are to either grate the plantains or to blend it. Both ways give a slightly different result to the texture of your porridge. If you want your porridge completely smooth creamy blending is your best option, however, if you prefer a bit of texture and like being able to chew on small bits of plantain then grating is a good choice for you. You can also play around with the sweeteners and milk that you use. You can try powdered milk, like lasco, condensed milk or coconut milk.

Jamaican Plantain Porridge Recipe

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 green plantains, peeled and sliced
  • 1 cup of coconut milk
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1/2 cup of condensed milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon of grated nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt

PROCEDURE

  1. Add your plantains to a blender with enough coconut milk to cover them, then blend until you achieve a smooth texture.
  2. Pour your mixture into a pot and bring it to a boil, stirring frequently to prevent lumps from forming. Do not cover the pot with a lid to prevent it from boiling over.
  3. The porridge will take around 20 minutes to fully cook. Stir in condensed milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly before serving.

You can enjoy your porridge on its own but it is also common practice for us to have our porridge with either hard dough bread or water crackers.

Jamaican porridge, including the delightful plantain variation, isn't just a culinary delight; it's a reflection of the island's warm hospitality and a testament to the creativity of Jamaican cooks. The use of locally sourced ingredients and traditional spices imparts a unique character to these porridges, making them a must-try for anyone exploring Jamaican cuisine. Incorporating plantain porridge into your breakfast routine not only provides essential nutrients but also offers a delightful and satisfying culinary experience.
