Juici Patties

The Juici Patties franchise has been around since the 1900s when a then 16-year-old Jukie Chin started selling them out of his family’s grocery store. The company officially started in the 1980s.

Present day, it is the only fast food establishment with locations in every parish on the island with 60+ stores islandwide. The extensive menu has over 50 different dishes.

The classic patties of beef, chicken, vegetable, soy and cheese (beef with cheese) are always available at Juici. But recently, they have added other variations to the flaky meat pie such as shrimp and ackee.

It is named Juici Patties, but with over 50 items, I’m sure you imagined there would be more than just patties. Juici opens very early in the morning (usually 7 o'clock) which means it is the place to grab a hearty breakfast to start your day.

Again you can have patties, but most Juici Patty locations will have cornmeal, banana, plantain, peanut or hominy porridge in the mornings as well. Another breakfast classic is ground provisions, fried dumplings with steamed vegetables, or ackee and saltfish.

For the rest of the day, you can get the soup of the day which is usually red peas, chicken or beef, meatloaves, coco bread or fried chicken and chips.

And if you are feeling up to it, banana or carrot cake are up for dessert. They also add delicious Jamaican Christmas cake to their offerings during Christmas time.

Mother’s

What you will come to notice is Jamaicans take patties seriously. And as such Mother’s is another well-known fast food company that sells patties.

Their main patties are beef, chicken, soy, fish, and curry goat with up to 25 different combinations when you add cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and bacon.

For breakfast, you can have ground provisions, fried dumplings and plantains with your choice of steamed vegetables, stewed chicken, liver, ackee and saltfish or mackerel rundown.

If you would prefer a lighter meal in the mornings, then a breakfast sandwich with vegetables, bacon and eggs, eggs only or ackee and saltfish can be had instead.

The 360-item menu also includes coco bread, burgers, sandwiches, chicken, soups, pastries and ice cream.

Mother’s currently has 18 locations islandwide. Mother’s was founded in 1981.

Tastee

The love for patty continues with yet another patty company, Tastee. Tastee was started in 1966, by Vincent Chang. Tastee is very popular among schoolchildren as they often have outlets in primary and secondary schools.

They too serve the classic Jamaican breakfast items of fried dumplings, ground provisions and a plethora of protein and vegetable options such as salt mackerel, ackee and saltfish, curried chicken, stewed chicken and callaloo. Delicious porridges are also part of the breakfast menu.

Tastee also serves various types of chicken, fries, nuggets, diced potatoes, soup, sandwiches and of course, patties. Their patty options include beef, curried chicken and jerk chicken.

Island Grill

Island Grill prides itself on providing healthier options for fast food. Usually, persons with dietary restrictions can try to get a bite to eat while on the road right here.

The franchise has many Jamaican staple dishes such as rice and peas, various chicken dishes and vegetarian options as well. They also do soups, beef burgers, chicken and fish sandwiches, festivals and green and ripe plantains.

Their drinks are usually blended, natural juices such as the veggie boostah (green juice), beetroot, freshly squeezed orange juice or carrot juice.

Sakura

The Chinese fusion fast food restaurant sells some of the best Chinese takeout dishes on the island. You can get the classic stir-fried varieties and sweet and sour chicken always, but in Jamaica, crispy fried sesame chicken is also a hit.

Vegetarians can also try tofu or vegetable options as well. Sakura has locations in Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and Kingston.

So there you have it, the best of Jamaican fast food. While Jamaicans have an undying love for KFC and also patronise other international fast-food chains, these Jamaican fast-food establishments are a hit on the island and a must-try for visitors.
